IMPACT ANALYSIS
Issues Impacting Global Business
July - August 2009
Is the Margaret Thatcher-Ronald Reagan economic model of free market capitalism dead? Once the post-global recessionary dust settles, companies, as well as countries, will need to prepare for what lies ahead (p1-3).
As President Obama seeks to boost the U.S. economy and build stronger ties with our friends abroad, he could advance both goals at once by urging Congress to pass the pending U.S.-Colombia FTA (p4).
Small business is the backbone of the U.S. economy and key to our economic recovery. Adjustments of various export promotion programs will help small business have an even larger impact (p5-6). The global economic crisis has not ruined the appetite for Chinese mergers and acquisitions. Companies are looking to their China operations to offset losses in other markets (p7-8).

CANADA AND THE U.S.: PARTNERS IN ECONOMIC RECOVERY
A message from the Consulate of Canada in Philadelphia, PA.
In response to the U.S. Stimulus package's "Buy American" provision, the Canadian Consulate seeks to remind American consumers and businesses of the intimate link between their two economies. In these trying economic times, Canada has sustained considerable job losses and is in the process of implementing their own stimulus package to kick-start the economy. A discriminatory provision, like "Buy American", will only hurt the positive relationship that has led to at least 21,000 jobs in Delaware alone.
So, to ensure an expedient economic recovery, the U.S. and Canada must work together and remain committed to non-discriminatory measures.
