IMPACT ANALYSIS

Issues Impacting Global Business

May - June 2009

The United States and China have a long history of cooperation and friendship. During the London G20 meeting, President Obama and Chinese President Hu Jinta agreed on the need to work closely together on today's more urgent problems.Today, this is more important than ever. The Obama administration may be given a free hand from Congress (p1-2)

For the sake of the economy and the prudent exercise of foreign policy, restoring the pro-trade consensus should be an economic and diplomatic priority of the new administration. This, however, is a very difficult task due to the global recession, an anti-trade climate in Washington, D.C., and a poor public understanding of the benefits of international business (p3-4).

In the past, thousands of small manufacturers supplied China's local communities.  Over the last three to five years, the logistics of distribution has made great strides in transparency, reliability and service. Today, the Chinese government views efficient distribution networks as critical to stimulating its economy and boosting domestic consumption. Although tremendous resources are being devoted to establishing national distribution networks, foreign companies may be forced to build their own (p5-6)

    LAST WEEK'S TRIVIA QUESTION

The East India Company's naval force responsible for hunting down pirates was known in the 17th-19th centuries as _______________?

    A)  The East Indiamen                               C)  The Royal
    B)  The Bengal Squadrons                         D)  The Bombay Marine

    Answer:  D) The Bombay Marine

The East India Company's naval force was created in 1612 under the name, The Honourable East India CompanyEast India Company's Marine.  In 1668, the British transferred possession of Bombay to the East India Company and the naval force became known as The Bombay Marine.  In 1830, The Bombay Marine was rennamed Her Majesty's Indian Navy.  The name was then changed several times before 1950 when it finally became The Indian Navy following the independence of India.  The Bengal Squadrons was the name of a group belonging to the Royal Navy assigned to aid The Bombay Marine.  The East Indiamen were armed ships belonging or operating under a license to The Honourable East India Company.  The Royal is the nickname for the French Navy (La Marine nationale).
