Issues Impacting Global Business
May - June 2009
The United States and China have a long history of cooperation and friendship. During the London G20 meeting, President Obama and Chinese President Hu Jinta agreed on the need to work closely together on today's more urgent problems.Today, this is more important than ever. The Obama administration may be given a free hand from Congress (p1-2)
For the sake of the economy and the prudent exercise of foreign policy, restoring the pro-trade consensus should be an economic and diplomatic priority of the new administration. This, however, is a very difficult task due to the global recession, an anti-trade climate in Washington, D.C., and a poor public understanding of the benefits of international business (p3-4).
In the past, thousands of small manufacturers supplied China's local communities. Over the last three to five years, the logistics of distribution has made great strides in transparency, reliability and service. Today, the Chinese government views efficient distribution networks as critical to stimulating its economy and boosting domestic consumption. Although tremendous resources are being devoted to establishing national distribution networks, foreign companies may be forced to build their own (p5-6)

LAST WEEK'S TRIVIA QUESTION
The 1957 Treaty of Rome established which of the following? A) The European Economic Community C) The European Union B) The Constitution of Europe D) The free movement of people, capital &
services among the member states
Answer: A) The European Economic Community
The formation of the European Economic Community in 1957 paved the way for the eventual creation of the European Union through the Treaty of Maastricht on November 1, 1993. Though the EEC removed some trade barriers and tariffs, it was not until 1987 and the creation of the Single European Act partially based on the 1986 Schengen Agreement that the member states set the deadline of 1992 for the creation of a full single market which included the free movement of people, capital and services. In 2004, the member states of the European Union signed the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe but the document faces opposition and has not been ratified. |
