BAHRAIN: FINANCIAL CENTER OF THE MIDDLE EAST
Free Trade and Banking with Ambassador Houda Ezra Nonoo
June 10, 2009 - Hotel duPont - WTC Delaware International Business Luncheon
The World Trade Center Delaware hosted the Bahraini Ambassador to the United States at the Hotel duPont on Wednesday, June 10, 2009. Ambassador Nonoo and Bahraini Trade Representative Rose Sager spoke about the many advantages of Delaware doing business with Bahrain.
Bahrain is a major regional banking sector with financial services representing 8% of Bahrain's GDP. Boasting the most highly diversified economy in the region, Bahrain serves as a model for economic development and foreign investment. The U.S.-Bahrain Free Trade Agreement enacted in August 2006 provides many opportunities for U.S. businesses.
Attendees referenced other positive partnerships between the United States and Bahrain: Vered Nohi-Becker, Marketing Services Manager, Port of Wilmington, referred to Wilmington as a large exporter of new vehicles to Bahrain. George Irvine, Associate Director, University of Delaware Continuing and Professional Studies cited The Middle East Partnership Initiative Summer Institute for Student Leaders at UD (a summer program designed to increase awareness of American culture and government) as representative of the close ties that the U.S. and Bahrain share. Issues Impacting Global Business
May - June 2009
The United States and China have a long history of cooperation and friendship. During the London G20 meeting, President Obama and Chinese President Hu Jinta agreed on the need to work closely together on today's more urgent problems.Today, this is more important than ever. The Obama administration may be given a free hand from Congress (p1-2)
For the sake of the economy and the prudent exercise of foreign policy, restoring the pro-trade consensus should be an economic and diplomatic priority of the new administration. This, however, is a very difficult task due to the global recession, an anti-trade climate in Washington, D.C., and a poor public understanding of the benefits of international business (p3-4).
In the past, thousands of small manufacturers supplied China's local communities. Over the last three to five years, the logistics of distribution has made great strides in transparency, reliability and service. Today, the Chinese government views efficient distribution networks as critical to stimulating its economy and boosting domestic consumption. Although tremendous resources are being devoted to establishing national distribution networks, foreign companies may be forced to build their own (p5-6)

LAST WEEK'S TRIVIA QUESTION
