Last Week's Trivia Question
Which country has the greatest number of islands?
A) Italy B) Greece C) Finland D) Ecuador
Answer: (C) Finland
Since the land began to emerge from the edge of the melting ice sheet 10,000 years ago, Finland has been rich in islands. Finland has claimed the title for the most number of islands at 179,584. The surface area of Finland is continuously growing by about 7 sq km a year due to uplift following the last ice age. Many of the islands in the archipelago were already inhabited in the Middle Ages. The Vikings and, later on, the Hansa merchants visited them on their trading voyages.
