Last Week's Trivia Question

When given a gift by a Japanese business associate you should:
A) act very impressed and enthusiastic
B) bow, but not accept the gift from the associate
C) bow and open it in front of the associate
D) bow, but not open it in front of the associate

Answer:
(D) Bow, but not open it in front of the associate

Wrapped Gifts

Gift-giving is an important part of Japanese business protocol. When visiting Japan on business, it is good policy to bring an assortment of gifts for your trip. This way, if you are unexpectedly presented with a gift, you will be able to reciprocate. A gift for an individual should be given in private. If gifts are to be presented to a group of people all of the intended recipients should be assembled together. In Japan gifts are opened in private because if the gift turns out to be a bad choice "loss of face" will occur. Opening gifts in private also prevents any possible comparisons of gifts in situations when several gifts are presented to people of different status.
