Last Week's Trivia Question

If you order "bubble and squeak" in a London pub, you will get:
A) Alka Seltzer and a glass of water
B) Chopped cabbage and mashed potatoes fried together
C) A very cold beer in a chilled glass, rather than the usual warm beer
D) Two fish fillets fried in olive oil

Answer:
(B) Chopped cabbage and mashed potatoes fried together

Bubble and Squeak

Bubble and squeak is a traditional English dish made with fried vegetables. The chief ingredients are potato and cabbage, but carrots, peas, brussels sprouts, and other vegetables can be added. The cold chopped vegetables are fried in a pan together with mashed potato until the mixture is well-cooked and brown on the sides. The name bubble and squeak is used throughout the UK. There are various theories as to the origin of its name, one of them being that it is a description of the action and sound made during the cooking process. In other parts of the country the dish may be referred to as bubble and scrape or fry up.
