Industry Beyond Oil: Opportunites in Oman
WTC Delaware Roundtable Business Luncheon, August 7, 2008 by Tyler Akin, WTC Delaware
|
On August 7, the World
Trade Center Delaware and Wilmington Rotary Club hosted an international
business luncheon featuring H.E. Hunaina Sultan Al-Mughairy, the Omani
ambassador to the United
States. Her country is storming into the 21st
century, equipped with a plan called "Vision 2020" to modernize, globalize, and
diversify its economy during the next 12 years. "We know that oil and gas
resources will not last forever," she explained, so diversification is Oman's top
priority.
The U.S.-Oman Free Trade Agreement of 2006 (OFTA) is a cornerstone of
their plans. But in the ambassador's eyes, OFTA wasn't about export expansion
for Oman.
Rather, Oman hopes to
facilitate foreign direct investment (FDI) from the U.S. into its economy and to import
technical know-how. These two factors will help Omani industry become more
efficient by reaching economies of scale, and will bolster the view of Oman as a
preferred venue for commercial activity. Muscat,
the capital of Oman, is
merely a three and a half hour drive to Dubai,
the emerging financial hub of western Arabia.
Ambassador Al-Mughairy explained that the tradition of U.S.-Omani
cooperation in fact runs deep. In 1833, Oman
was the first Arab nation to sign an immunity and commerce treaty with the U.S. A partner
in the war on terror and a stable nation with a deep respect for the rule of
law-including intellectual property rights-Oman has embraced progressive
approaches to labor, environmental, and gender policies.
While Oman is
certainly at the vanguard of gender policies in the Middle
East, the ambassador described the situation throughout the Muslim
world as less dire than is commonly thought. Indeed, five of the six Gulf
Cooperation Council (GCC) member states have women in cabinet posts, and Oman ensures
wage parity for comparable jobs performed by men and women. And while the United States has just recently seen its first
female Speaker of the House, Bangladesh,
Pakistan, and Indonesia have
all elected female leaders. Although most Omani schools remain segregated by
sex, the number of schools has grown from one to 1,600 in the past 38
years.
After serving as representative of the Omani
Center for Investment Promotion and
Export Development in New York from 1999 to
2005, Ambassador Al-Mughairy took her post in Washington D.C.,
and was instrumental in the negotiations to create OFTA. A New York
University-trained economist, Al-Mughairy is also the first female envoy to the
U.S.
from any Arab country.
Following her discussion in the Hotel DuPont's Gold Ballroom,
representatives from several local and regional businesses met the ambassador
in private to discuss specific commercial opportunities.
From the perspective of American businesses, Oman represents a growing,
middle-income market for goods and services as it strives to achieve its Vision
2020 diversification goals. Please contact WTCDE if you are interested in
learning more about commercial opportunities in Oman or to attend future
international business luncheons.

Olympic Opportunities
The Games offer numerous opportunities to gain exposure, both in relation to venues for the games and associated infrastructure. For instance, in the Beijing Summer Games the investments in non-Olympic infrastructure are more than ten times larger than the investments directly associated with the Games. It is important, however, to note that the Olympics themselves may not be a great profit maker. Rather, the Olympics represent an incredible marketing opportunity for companies who want to showcase their brand, products, and expertise to an international consumer base.

TSA Launches Certified Cargo Screening Program
The Certified Cargo Screening Program ("CCSP") is a voluntary program that allows certified manufacturers, exporters and forwarders to screen air cargo before it is shipped. The Security Administration ("TSA") is now deploying the CCSP in nine pilot cities- Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Seattle. By the end of 2008, TSA expects to set up ten to fifteen facilities and deploy TSA Field Teams in each of the selected cities.
The CCSP is intended to ease compliance with the Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007, P.L. 110-53 (the "9/11 Commission Act"), which requires 100 percent screening of cargo carried on passenger aircraft by August 2010. Currently, air carriers perform most cargo screening. As a result of the increased screening required by the 9/11 Commission Act, much of the burden of cargo screening is likely to shift from air carriers to manufacturing and freight forwarding facilities.

Last Week's Trivia Question
The Olympic torch burns all throughout the duration of the Games. Where is the Olympic torch lit?
A) Temple of Hera
B) Temple of Diana
C) Temple of Zeus
D) Temple of Hestia
Answer:
(A) Temple of Hera

The Olympic Flame or Olympic Torch is a symbol of the Olympic Games. Commemorating the theft of fire from the Greek god Zeus by Prometheus, its origins lie in ancient Greece, when a fire was kept burning throughout the celebration of the ancient Olympics. For the ancient Greeks, fire had divine connotations - it was thought to have been stolen from the gods by Prometheus. Therefore, fire was also present at many of the sanctuaries in Olympia, Greece. A fire permanently burned on the altar of Hestia in Olympia, Greece. During the Olympic Games, which honored Zeus, additional fires were lit at his temple and that of his wife, Hera. The modern Olympic flame is ignited at the site where the temple of Hera used to stand. |
