Greetings!
Bill Gates recently said, "We are in an economic downturn but an innovation upturn." Most people are focusing on the downturn and the dangers it poses rather than on the opportunity for innovation. Most businesses are restructuring and streamlining their operations. How can you maximize your chances in the change maelstrom? One way is to take a positive approach to change and to be seen as an innovative go-getter who will help make the re-organization a success. Here are 7 ways to do it.

Here are the results of a BBC survey to find the worst examples of management speak. For me, at the end of the day, we need a paradigm shift going forward to eliminate these redundant communication malfunctions.

Last week I ran a session for GBPA corporate members where we discussed innovation metrics. We reviewed the Boston Consulting Group 2007 research on the subject and the results of my innovation metrics web survey. It was agreed that most organisations find it difficult to measure innovation in any satisfactory way. The most common measurements are backward looking - e.g. % of revenue from products released in the last two years. The BCG report recommends that you select a small number of metrics appropriate for your business and have some for inputs, process and outputs. At the meeting we discussed which were the best metrics to use and our choices are listed on the BQF Innovation Blog. Please add your comments.

Here are some quick brainteasers to flex your creative thinking. Email me with the answers (or requests for them). The first three correct answers win a copy of my new book, Captivating Lateral Thinking Puzzles co- authored with Des MacHale.

  1. What same three letters can you put in front of these words to make new words; Sport, Sword, Time?
  2. Can you draw a rectangle with three straight lines?
  3. Which country has the longest border with France?
Here is a popular video showing the very innovative act by Kevin James on America's Got Talent. It stunned the judges. How does he do it?
A remarkable video of a scenic walk in Spain along El Camino del Rey. It is now closed to visitors. I cannot imagine why.
