March 9, 2011

WGC Donors and Friends,

On Monday, March 7 we had an amazing crowd of 140+ women at our 9th Annual Meeting of the Women's Giving Circle: Voices of Empowerment!

On the eve of International Women's Day, we reflected upon the meaningful work accomplished by the Women's Giving Circle the past nine years, discussed the impact we are having on the community through The Response Network, highlighted our new Young Women's Giving Circle, heard from Keynote Speaker Rachel Garbow Monroe about women's empowerment, and looked excitedly to the future.

In a nutshell, we celebrated:

  • $900,000+ in gifts and pledges
  • 900+ donors
  • $500,000+ in our endowment
  • $185,000 given in grants
  • 180+ girls in Journey Camp
  • 56+ local, regional and national media mentions
  • 35+ women, children helped by $30,000 & 300 women -The Response Network
  • 35+ programs and events with 45+ sponsors & community partners
  • 14 girls in the first class of the new Young Women's Giving Circle
  • 1 community of women philanthropists - the WGC!

And, we are counting on your continued support for our Celebrate the Circle Campaign and our goal of reaching 1,000 donors and $1,000,000 in 10 years!

At the meeting we were reminded how women continue to experience the benefits and rewards of leveraging our time, talent and resources on behalf of our interests. We are merging power, money and the desire to act as catalysts for change within our community.

And, we asked you to share what empowerment means to you - here are some highlights of what you said: "I am empowered by my daughters", "Free and focused", "There is no room for arrogance in this work", "Do anything!", "Yes, you can!", "Speak or sit", "If you are not keeping score, you are just practicing", "Courage is free", "I am empowered by the energy of women making a difference together", and "Philanthropy = Empowerment!"

We hope you enjoy this terrific article yesterday about the Annual Meeting:

"As Howard County's Female Philanthropists Enter 10th Year, They've Got Company"

Our profound thanks go to the many women who helped make this year's Annual Meeting a success, including our Event Chair Kathy Barnett and the Annual Meeting Committee, sponsors, in-kind donors, current and former WGC Advisory Board members, professional staff, volunteers, raffle ticket buyers, attendees, live Twitter pros, the Howard County Conservancy, Hammond High Symphonic Band and Orchestra (one of whom is a YWGC member) and Keynote Rachel Garbow Monroe!

We look forward to an exciting year in 2011 filled with new philanthropic opportunities, unique community outreach, and dramatic impact on women and girls in Howard County.

Thank You!  Cynthia Taliano, Chair
