Be Informed!
Where Does the Money Go?...
Sometimes we think of "giving grants" as providing a large sum of money to an organization.  But, there are many times that a smaller sum of money can have a significant impact too.  In 2009 the WGC gave a $700 grant to Healthy Families Howard County - and what did it do?
The grant provided:
·         A gift of $200 to a family of an immigrant mother of a 16 month old who suffered a stroke to help with expenses like childcare, doctors, food and diapers while the mom was recovering.
·         A gift of $90 toward the purchase of a crib for a baby who had outgrown his carrier
·         A gift of $95 toward the purchase of two new car seats for a one and three year old whose family had been in a car accident rendering their old seats unusable.
·         A gift of $200 toward driving school costs for an immigrant mother hoping to get her license so she can obtain a part-time job and attend school.
·         A gift of $67 to several families with open staircases in need of safety gates for crawling babies.
"Your generous gift of support has successfully assisted several mothers and children in improving their circumstances and long term future outcomes.  On behalf of all the Healthy Families Team Members, thank you for all that you have done in bettering their lives."
And we say thanks to all of YOU for pooling your dollars so we can make many grants of various sizes that assist women and girls in our community!

New Young Women's Giving Circle of Howard County

If you are a current or incoming high school student, you are invited to join the first-ever Young Women's Giving Circle of Howard County!  The YWGC will be a component of the Women's Giving Circle.  You'll learn how to raise money and be able to give it away to nonprofit groups that are working on issues that you care about.  As a youth group, YOU will decide your priorities for making the world a better place.  YOU will decide how to raise the money, and YOU will interview different organizations.  And, finally, YOU will decide who receives the money.
In other words, YOU will become a philanthropist and join a new wave of youth philanthropy!

If you or someone you know are interested in learning more about the program or would like to view the membership form click here. The due date to get membership form to Jackie Dawson has been extended to Monday, September 13, 2010.

WGC Response Network
This month, the Response Network took on a large task and succeeded again.  The WGC's generous donors raised $1000 for FIRN.  This money was to help a woman who is disabled and in danger of losing her electricity. She fell behind in her payments when her mother became ill and needed her daughter's help to buy medications. Without this $1000, this woman's power would have been turned off. Thank you to all that helped meet this women's needs.

SPECIAL REQUEST: Grassroots is looking for a used refrigerator as a donation.  If you or someone you know has one, please contact Kim at kflyr@verizon.net
