Where Does the Money Go?...
A new non-profit organization received a one time grant of $200 this year to help with start up costs. Girls on the Run of Howard County is a non-profit program for girls in the 3rd through 8th grade. Their mission is to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.
Warming up for the big race to finish the Spring program.
Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run combines training for a 5K running event with healthy living education.  The programs instill self-esteem and strong values through health education, life skills development, mentoring relationships, and physical training - all through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff, and the community.
With the help of the grant, the inaugural season was a huge success! The fall season is looking to be bigger and better.

Support the WGC through community events...
Volunteers Needed! The WGC is partnering with the Columbia Triathlon Association by volunteering at the Food Tents for several triathlon events this season. We are seeking Food Tent volunteers for the Celebration Sprint triathlon on Sunday, June 27, 2010.

WGC Circle Team members will be racing in several of these events.  If you cannot volunteer, come on out and cheer on our team!

If you are interested in volunteering, contact Robin Procida at rprocida@comcast.net. Thank you!
WGC Circle Team
The WGC Circle Team is well into their training for the 2010 season of races.  These inspirational ladies are working hard to be ready for the Iron Girl in August which consists of a .62 mile swim, a 17.5 mile bike ride and a 3.4 mile run.  In addition to the hard physical work they have been enduring, they just reached the $10,000 mark with fundraising!  We are half way to our $20,000 goal!

This year's team is made up of over 50 women who will be competing in the 2010 Iron Girl or Columbia Triathlon. Many women will be competing for the very first time! These women are participating in weekly bike and run trainings with the guidance of some great leaders.

All Circle Team members will be raising funds for the WGC. We invite you to support this amazing group of women by making a donation to the team.

Please visit www.active.com/donate/circleteam2010 to make a donation.
Some of the Circle Team members raced the Columbia Triathlon as a relay.

New Young Women's Giving Circle of Howard County

If you are a current or incoming high school student, you are invited to join the first-ever Young Women's Giving Circle of Howard County!  The YWGC will be a component of the Women's Giving Circle.  You'll learn how to raise money and be able to give it away to nonprofit grous that are working on issues that you care about.  As a youth group, YOU will decide your priorities for making the world a better place.  YOU will decide how to raise the money, and YOU will interview different organizations.  And, finally, YOU will decide who receives the money.
In other words, YOU will become a philanthropist and join a new wave of youth philanthropy!

If you or someone you know are interested in learning more about the program or would like to view the membership form click here. The membership form is due by August 6th to Jackie Dawson.

Movie & Discussion - "Nana, Mom, & Me", 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm (Miller Library)
Join us for the viewing of this documentary that was filmed by a woman in Baltimore in the early 1970's.  The filmmaker, who is considering having a child, examines the interrelationships between herself, her mother, and her grandmother.  It raises questions about the nature of family and feminine relationships which will be part of the discussion following the viewing.  Mature audience recommended.  Please contact Caroline Sherman at csherman@uhy-us.com for further information.

WGC Response Network
In 2010, the WGC Response Network raised $3,720 to help five women and their families.
The network periodically sends out emails to WGC members soliciting contributions to address the specific need of a woman client identified by selected nonprofit agencies serving women and girls in Howard County. Currently, those selected agencies are The Domestic Violence Center, Grassroots, Healthy Families, Elder Services of Family and Children's Services and FIRN.

All WGC donors are leveraging their dollars for change, and having a profound effect on the growth of women's giving in Howard County.

We have established a variety of giving levels, but appreciate any and all donations we receive.

We are encouraging women of all generations to join us in building this fund that will assist our community both now and in the future.
