March 2010

Be Informed!
On March 3rd, WGC's 2010 Annual Meeting and "Women's Philanthropy: Empowerment, Passion & Impact" was a huge success!

Over 200 women joined us in our joint celebration of women's philanthropy with The Columbia Foundation.  At this event, we reflected upon the meaningful work and accomplishments by the WGC in the paannual mtg2st eight years, discussed the impact the WGC and the Columbia Foundation have had on our community and highlighted the continuing needs of women and girls in Howard County.

A special thank you to our Keynote Speaker, Sondra-Shaw Hardy who led a discussion on the power and impact of women's philanthropy through the 9 "C's" of why women give: Create, Change, Commit, Connect, Collaborate, Celebrate, Control, Confidence and Courage.  There are so many philanthropic women across our country by whom we can be inspired!       annual mtg   annual mtg3

We are excited that our first "Power of the Purse" auction was a great success in raising money for the WGC!  Thank you to the amazing local artists who donated their time and talent to this effort!

Thank You again to our Event Sponsors!

STEMOn March 14th, The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory and Math Engineering Science Achievement and the WGC hosted The Girl Power STEM Careers Expo for Girls for middle and high school girls.  This free event attracted 500 young girls and their parents.  Attendees met and talked with professional women in their fields of interest, participated in hands-on STEM activities and visited displays on careers in aerospace, chemistry, computer science, engineering, geology, information technology and more.  AAUW (formerly known as American Association of University Women) recently published a research report examining why there are so few women scientists and engineers.  This fascinating report can be found on the AAUW website.
