July/August 2009

Be Informed!

The Women's Giving Circle is investing in the lives of women and girls in our community.  Here is an example of how...

An immigrant mother of a 16-month old living in Howard County suffered a stroke. healthy families image She needed open heart surgery and long term rehabilitation therapy.  She was forced to leave her job as her husband worked two jobs to try to make ends meet.  Having no relatives to turn to, this mother simply could not afford basic care for her baby.  Through our emergency grants, the WGC invested in this woman and her family and provided the money needed to cover expenses for a sitter, transportation to the doctors, diapers and food during her recovery.

Be Engaged!

If you are engaged with the WGC, you can witness the power we have to impact our community.  One donor recently commented...

mean girls1I commend you for your service to the Women's Giving Circle of Howard County. I work at Howard County Library's Savage Branch and was working the night that the "Mean Girls" seminar was presented. After looking at the Women's Giving Circle's website, I realized that they were sponsors along with the Horizon Foundation. The event was a huge success. It was completely "sold out" and all the the participants had very positive things to say about the message it conveyed. Your organization is a wonderful asset to our community.

WGC's Journey Program
The Women's Giving Circle's Journey Program concluded its summer 2009 camp session in late June.  Several WGC Donors had the opportunity to visit the camp and chat with its participants.  Following is an account of the visit through the eyes of WGC donor, Kristin.
 journey09
Our WGC road trip to visit the Journey Camp participants at Washington College evolved into more than just a "meet and greet" event.  Upon arriving in Chestertown, we were welcomed by the 32 young ladies, all rising 8th or 9th graders, and they delighted the WGC audience with a presentation that described several local women of achievement.
After our presentation feedback, each WGC member walked with their small group of girls to the dining hall for dinner.  The maturity, etiquette, direction, and friendliness these young ladies showed, was most welcoming and refreshing to the WGC members.
It was evident after our short time together, that the girls were not only taking home new friendship connections, but also a positive and rewarding experience.  The mutual goal that WGC and MLW strive for by empowering young women, was met, and exceeded as illustrated by these Journey participants. It was a special time spent with WGC and Journey Camp and our hope that all women can have similar opportunities in their futures.
WGC Partnerships
WGC and Greenberries
Greenberries, a newly opened children's and maternity consignment boutique in the Kings' Contrivance Village Center, and the WGC have joined forces to support each other and women and girls in Howard County.  Soon, greenberries will offer consignees the opportunity to donate all, or some, of their sales earnings to the WGC and will provide WGC greenberriesbrochures in the store.

Owner, Rachel Baliff says, "I am excited about the ability to have clients give back easily to a non-profit, like WGC."  The WGC hopes to educate greenberries customers on the value of local philanthropy.  Both greenberries and the WGC look forward to this new partnership.

Greenberries will be hosting a Grand Opening event on Sunday, August 22, 10am - 3pm in the Kings' Contrivance Courtyard.  This will be a great family event featuring face painting, games, special promotions and giveaways.
