Greetings!

We usually send newsletters once a month, but here's an extra one with a few particularly juicy items.

Peer Pressure: An Invitation

As you may know, 500 of our peers just named me a finalist for the Pinnacle Award of the International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP), for contributions to the field of sustainability. The other nominees are Ray Anderson, Amory Lovins, Karl-Henrik Robert and Bob Willard, so as you can imagine I am deeply honored to be in the company of heros.

Would you help me deepen the meaning and impact of this award? I'm looking for five people to work with me in a personal coaching relationship, so I can bring my experience to them -- to help them take their sustainability work, their effectiveness and their impact to the next level.

Is this something that could benefit you, or someone you work with?  If so, please call or email me today so we can discuss whether you're an appropriate candidate for this program. I'll ask you about your goals, concerns. commitments and challenges; I'll describe
how the program works; and I'll make clear my commitments to you. (In a nutshell: to be more committed to your commitments than you are!)

I suggest you call today, since I'm limiting this program to five people. (And be sure to ask me about the special discount available for people who sign on by Friday May 27.)

CFOs and Sustainability

Our third In Conversation dialog featured R Paul Herman, CEO of HIPinvestor.com and Natural Logic CEO Gil Friend, as planned, and surprise guest Vince Sciciliano, CEO of New Resource Bank.

We had a wide-raging discussion exploring the cutting edge of sustainable finance, how both CFOs and investors are re-thinking the business case for sustainability, and the critical challenge of "getting the prices right."

We focused on enterprise issues: how CFOs assess risk and value when increasingly material factors don't show up on the P&L or the balance sheet, either because they're not within the boundary of consideration or because we just don't know how to value them; why capital hurdle rates are set so low, and how to bridge concerns over long-term vs short term returns; whether - and how - to tie sustainability performance to incentive compensation; and more.

We also talked about policy issues, like eliminating market-distorting and environmentally damaging subsidies (remembering RFK Jr's admonition that all pollution is a subsidy), and personal issue, like voting with your dollars in the election that's held every day.

Watch for forthcoming thinking from us about CFOs and sustainability. And If you're a CFO who'd like to talk about this -- or know a CFO who should -- we'd like to talk to you too!

We had hoped to have the event video posted by now, but we've had some minor technical delays. Please keep your eye on this news letter, my blog and tweetstream, and we'll let you know when it's available -- and about forthcoming events in the In Conversation series.

But in the meantime, we have another video for you. Read on...
Keynote "shootout": Innovation

Here's the video of my keynote at Cal State University Monterey Bay. Rebecca Costa (the other keynote) and I are big fans of each other, but don't always see eye to eye on the human prospect. Costa says "we can't innovate our way out of this dilemma," but have to learn to think differently. I'm all for thinking differently, but I think innovation is who we are as a species, and what we do.
