Several times a week, someone asks us "How is the global financial crisis affecting the sustainable business movement?" We see mixed signals: decision cycles can be slower, since nervous humans tend to be careful with their cash; but smart companies are thinking more deeply about sustainability and regeneration, aspiring more boldly, and investing in the new, low-carbon economy they -- and we -- see coming.

Here at Natural Logic, we've taken several steps to meet these needs. One is distilling "everything we know" into our new book, The Truth About Green Business. Another is streamlining our service offerings to make it easier for you to find exactly the level of engagement you need. You can read about both of these below. And, coming soon, a new suite of Carbon Neutral Learning&trade opportunities, to bring your people the knowledge they need tp put these big ideas to work everyday.

Two Natural Logic clients that have done a great job of putting big ideas to work: Levi Strauss & Company, and the City of Berkeley (CA) -- both of whom were winners of the San Francisco Business Times "Green Business Award" for 2009. Hearty congratulations to them both!

And since we love to celebrate progress, good ideas and good work, please join us August 18 at the Commonwealth Club (San Francisco) for a talk about The Truth About Green Business, followed by an our slightly delayed book launch party at the Temple night club. Details below!

The Truth About Green Business is making waves

Speaking engagements and media attention galore
TTAGB front cover 1.5" wide

The Truth About Green Business has become a magnet for business professionals looking to make smart, sustainable change.

The reviews praise the book's practicality and foresight:

  • "Among the many books written on greening business, this book stands out in its practicality."
  • "As an SME and instructor for California State Universities' Green Biz program, I can highly recommend this book. We will be using it for our future classes."
  • "There's tons of good information, and it's beautifully organized into manageable information bites. I highly recommend it!"
  • "Fence-sitting is over. This book clearly identifies the business case, strategies, and opportunities for those ready to move forward."
  • "I believe Gil has laid out the case so clearly for going green, that even the most cynical business person who is skeptical about green would have to take a second look on how he/she is running the business."
  • Our favorite review: the many people who say, "I'm buying copies for our entire staff." Is your company interested in a custom-branded special edition? Contact us to find out more about bulk or custom orders.

The book has gotten a wide array of media attention. An extended excerpt from The Truth About Green Business is the cover story in the July-August 2009 issue of Organic Processing Magazine. Reality Sandwich and other venues have featured content as well. Our Twitter campaign "Green Business Lies" was picked up by the New York Times Green Inc. blog. Articles on the book have also appeared in Reuters, sustainablog, Social Funds, and an in-depth interview with Joel Makower is posted on GreenBiz.

Speaking in support of the book, author Gil Friend will be appearing at The Commonwealth Club in San Francisco on August 18 (see below for details).

The book is frequently highly ranked on Amazon -- rising as high as third in its category, right behind Thomas L. Friedman and Jim Collins. Also, in response to demand, FT Press is already preparing for a second printing of the book.

Putting Natural Logic to Work for You

    Curvometer on map

Natural Logic helps businesses and governments prosper -- designing and delivering exceptional environmental, social and economic performance -- by embedding the laws of nature at the heart of enterprise.

We bring an integrative approach to our work with clients, since piecemeal approaches just don't do the job. The ideal engagement takes clients through the complete cycle of charting your course (Strategy), reading the signs (Feedback) and making it go (Implementation).

But "integrative" doesn't mean "all at once." You can begin with any of our three options, each at a different scale of intensity. In each case we tailor our approach to your organization's needs, circumstances, and readiness -- and we design each engagement to produce clear, reliable results:

Strategic briefings: Our CEO and senior associates conduct a customized, confidential briefing for your executive team on the key trends and emerging issues facing your company.

Rapid diagnostics: Our team provides a fast, focused, rigorous diagnosis of your current baseline performance -- from carbon to operations, from measurement systems to risk -- and recommends prioritized opportunities for profitable improvement.

Comprehensive engagements: Our team helps you design and implement systemic change at your company and supply chain to ensure that you effectively and consistently harvest the value you identify.

    News from the sustainability revolution
    Cockpit+Hands

Here are just a few of the projects we've had the pleasure of working on recently:

  • Working with the Coca-Cola Company, we're guiding a multi-stakeholder innovation process that's examining resource recovery policy and business models, and helping design next-generation frameworks for Extended Producer Responsibility systems at national and local levels.
  • We're developing data gathering and analytic systems to support an industry-wide energy & carbon performance benchmarking initiative -- and testing some rapid carbon footprinting tools that offer the potential for faster, more timely footprints at much lower cost.
  • Coming this fall: our Carbon Neutral Learning&trade programs resume, starting with a webinar series built around The Truth About Green Business. There are even more interesting learning offerings to follow; we can't talk about them yet, but you'll be the first to know.!
  • Watch for news about our sustainability dashboard initiatives (for both businesses and communities) at the West Coast Green conference this fall. And meanwhile, check out our white paper on the Inter-Collegiate Carbon League (and bringing sports into the climate action game) in the Climate Neutral Campus Report, coming in August
  • Another white paper is in the works, benchmarking municipal sustainability plans across the country.
  • Which reminds me to remind you: our RetrofitOptimizerTM service helps owners or operators of large real estate holdings (whether REITs, large corporations, school systems and government entities) optimize energy efficiency retrofit projects across their property portfolios. This service is available for direct use by building owners and operators, and for licensing to ESCOs and others for use with their clients. For details and pricing contact Ken Hejmanowski, 510-248-4940, khejmanowski at natlogic dot com
  • (There are other projects that aren't yet ready to share in the light of day. Watch for our next newsletter to learn about them.)
