In our November newsletter I noted that the financial meltdown "is just one of a cascade of crises stacked up offshore -- credit, infrastructure, energy, carbon, water, the list goes on." You know by now that things are worse than they appear, and everyone is struggling with how to address the challenges, both macro and micro.

It's a dangerous time, but one that calls for boldness as well as caution. Investment in the new energy economy. Trimming your sails. Testing your strategy against new realities.

We know some things now we didn't know then:
- President Obama has called for a market cap on carbon, which means odds are that there will be growing financial incentives moving us to a carbon-constrained economy.
- People -- and companies -- increasingly understand that investing in the new energy economy is a critical part of the way out of the meltdown (of both financial institutions and glaciers).
- Billions of federal dollars are moving to fuel those investments -- $33 billion in grants and $134 billion in loans from the DOE alone, including $9.5b for energy efficiency and greening Federal buildings. (Details at http://www.doe.gov/recovery)

That's why Natural Logic has taken three important steps to bring our decade of experience to bear, to help our clients effectively navigate these tumultuous and remarkable times -- and to do it in ways that make the most economic sense for you, and the greatest contribution to the historic transition the human economy must undertake.

1. We've streamlined our service offerings -- to make it easier and faster for you to engage our experts, in the form and at the level that makes the most sense for you.

2. We've released a new tool -- RetrofitOptimizer™ -- to help building owners and operators optimize energy efficiency retrofit projects across their property portfolio.

3. We've formed a strategic alliance with Pegasus Capital Advisors to extend the impact of our respective offerings.

Read on for details on each of these initiatives. (You can use the links on the left to jump to the articles that interest you the most.)

And call me today, if your company might be ready to take the next big step -- and embrace goals that are sufficient to the challenges we face.

Streamlined Services

Harvesting value with integrative strategies
Curvometer on map

Natural Logic has always brought an integrative approach to its work, but sometimes that made it challenging to communicate what we do -- and what you get -- since we don't do just one thing.

Our clients are increasingly looking for comprehensive strategies and solutions, recognizing that piecemeal won't do the job. But they still often ask "where do we start?"

So let me sum it up in three options, each at a different scale of intensity, tailored to your organization's needs and readiness:
1. Strategic Briefings
2. Rapid Diagnostics
3. Comprehensive Engagements

1. Strategic briefings
On as little as one week's notice, our CEO and Senior Associates will conduct a customized, confidential briefing (half-day to full-day) for your executive team on key trends and emerging issues.

Results: A clear picture of the strategic landscape you face; identification of your immediate and emerging operating opportunities; and a preliminary evaluation of your current capacities to exploit them.

2. Rapid Diagnostics
We will provide a rigorous diagnosis (in as little as two weeks) of your present state and key opportunities in one or more of the following domains:

Strategy: Is your sustainability strategy sufficient to the challenges and opportunities you face? And is it sufficiently integrated with your business strategy?

Metrics: What is the health of your organization's Corporate Performance Management (CPM) system? How do you measure your sustainability progress? How well do you use those measures to drive that progress?

Operations: Are you still spending more of your potential profits than you absolutely must on energy, water, waste water, materials and waste management?

Carbon: Do you know your carbon footprint? Are you adequately prepared to profitably reduce it?

Risk: Are you fully aware of - and prepared to deal with - both the "inevitable surprises" and the unpredictable changes your business will face in the coming years?

Capacity: Does your organization have the capacity - in leadership, communications, agility, change management and general competence - to get the job done?

Results: We will deliver a frank assessment of your gaps and opportunities, our prioritized recommendations of how you can move against them, and a roadmap for effective action to reduce costs, risk and impacts, while building profit, brand and your capacity to manage in difficult times.

3. Comprehensive Engagements
When your organization is ready to take on the systemic change, we'll show you how to make a new assessment of the situation at your company and your extended supply chain network. We will work beside you as you get into action to respond to what you find, and ensure that you effectively and consistently harvest the value that you identify.

This work proceeds in a five-phase cycle:

Engage
- Brief your leadership on key trends
- Surface your aspirations & concerns

Assess
- Assess practices & performance
- Map strategic landscape

Design
- Design profitable, implementable, scalable practices - and supporting systems - to traverse that landscape
- No excuses. "Good ideas that could not be implemented" is an excuse for bad design.

Implement/Mobilize
- Focus, train, and support your internal and external stakeholders to deliver results
- Embed/operationalize/internalize

Evaluate
- Measure & evaluate financial & physical results
- Establish systems to track & drive performance
- Quarterly metrics review & tune-up

Results:
- Immediate cost savings
- Strategic path to build capacity
- Hard-to-copy competitive advantage
- Integrated performance measurement framework
- New interpretations and a path to a new future
- Not less than 10x ROI, and in less than 2 years

RetrofitOptimizer™

Manage energy and cash with RetrofitOptimizer services & software
Beetham Tower (Thompski, CC)

Problem: Owners or operators of large residential and commercial real estate holdings (such as REITs, large corporations and government entities) need to optimize energy efficiency retrofit projects across their property portfolio to deliver the best results in relation to: cash flow, budgets and ROI requirements; specific energy and carbon performance goals; and time constraints.

Solution: Natural Logic's RetrofitOptimizer™ service and software help them do that, by generating "what-if" forecasting scenarios that analyze the actions, costs, impacts, savings and ROI of alternate strategies for a range of energy efficiency projects. This saves both time and money in retrofit planning, and enables owners and operators to select the optimum combination of initiatives - and to communicate them, effectively and persuasively, to bankers, investors and contractors. (This will become even more important as they compete for the $5b in retrofit funding that's been allocated in the stimulus package.)

Options: You can engage RetrofitOptimizer in three ways:

1. Contract with Natural Logic to analyze your options, and deliver a report detailing results and recommended actions.

2. Purchase a customized version of RetrofitOptimizer™ to perform your own analysis and determine your best course of action.

3. License a web-based, multi-user version of RetrofitOptimizer™ to teams to collaborate in creating and analyzing different scenarios.

RetrofitOptimizer is available for direct use by building owners and operators, and for licensing to ESCOs and others for use with their clients. For details and pricing contact Ken Hejmanowski, 510-248-4940, khejmanowski at natlogic dot com.

Project Highlights

News from the sustainability revolution
Cockpit+Hands

Here are just a few of the clients we've had the pleasure of working with recently:

Fair Trade coffee pioneers Equal Exchange hired Natural Logic to perform an Eco-Assessment of their W. Bridgewater, MA roasting plant and to measure their greenhouse gas emissions. Equal Exchange's employees and worker-owners are already green-oriented, participating in vanpooling and composting, but needed a roadmap to help them determine where to focus future efforts on reducing their carbon footprint and increasing efficiency at their offices and plant. The company recently received a Social Innovation Award from Financial Times and JustMeans.

Natural Logic has partnered with Yudelson Associates, a leading green building consulting firm, to develop an introduction to sustainability for the National Association of Electrical Distributors (NAED). As momentum builds in the green building field, distributors are finding that customers are increasingly interested in energy efficient and greener electrical products and systems. This project will equip them with the information they need to successfully develop their own corporate sustainability programs.

Natural Logic has been engaged by a national financial services firm to help build their enterprise-wide sustainability strategy, starting by analyzing the environmental performance of their office buildings around the country -- some of which are high tech and paperless, and some of which are traditional operations -- to identify and propagate best practices across the firm.

(Watch for our next newsletter to learn about other projects underway and in the pipeline.)
