(If you are receiving this email for the
first time, welcome to our mailing list. If
you've already received this newsletter,
we're updating
our database and you will only receive a single
copy of the next issue.)
Welcome to the latest news from Natural
Logic--strategic advisors to the sustainable
economy.
It may be February, but it feels like
springtime in Berkeley. After a week of rain,
all of the trees are in bloom.
We've been crazy busy and from where we
stand, sustainability is less of a "movement"
and more of a big green rocket. It's quite a
ride, and we're enjoying the velocity.
That in mind, this is a shorter newsletter
than usual. We're too busy working to write
about the work! But we like to stay in touch,
so here's some exciting project news, an
update on our new office space (open house
March 18--and you're invited!), and an
overview of green social marketing trends as
of three days ago.
And while you're checking out the latest from
us, fill out our survey. We'd love to know
what's on your mind!
New Offices! Big Party! You're invited!

We've moved! We're now in spacious, airy
offices at the Strawberry Creek Design Center
(sharing space with the Next Now
Collaboratory) and we'd love to have you join
us for our first open house, March 18.
Please RSVP at office_at_natlogic.com (so we
can plan for the right number of guests) and
we'll send you the party details!

What do you want to see?
We wrapped up our 2007 Carbon Neutral
Learning series with an exploration of
"Green Tomorrows" with futurist, scenario
planner (and Natural Logic senior associate)
Jamais Cascio. Jamais used "scenario
planning" methods to sketch four possible
scenarios -- both appealing and not so
appealing -- of how "greener tomorrows" might
unfold, and discussed how to be ready for
each of them.
Our four-part "Coming to Grips With Carbon"
series was so well received that we're
editing the transcripts and supporting
materials into a book. Watch for it later
this year.
We're completing the roster for upcoming
Carbon Neutral LearningTM
offerings; please click the link below to let
us know what topics you'd like us to cover.

News from the sustainability revolution
Crescent
Resources, a real estate development and
planning company, asked Natural Logic to help
"green" their operations. This initiative
makes perfect sense particularly at their Palmetto
Bluff development, which has been planned
as a "place" rather than a "project" and
integrates with the site wildlife, watershed
and ecology.
Palmetto is operated by luxury resort company Auberge
Resorts, whose Calistoga Ranch property
is also a "seed spa" of the Green Spa Network,
another Natural Logic client. We've just
completed eco-audits of Auberge's other
properties (Auberge du Soleil in Sonoma,
Calistoga Ranch in Napa and Esperanza in Cabo
San Lucas), so check 'em out -- and watch for
their new location opening in Santa Fe this
year.
Business
Metabolics, our interactive
performance dashboard system (on which
OpenEco is
based) now has its own
website,
complete with a five minute self-running
demo. Check it out, and contact us to learn
how a sustainability dashboard can help your
company, college, community or trade
association more effectively track and drive
its sustainability performance.
Long-time client Stopwaste.Org
has launched a UseReusables
Campaign, in the quest to help companies
move beyond recycling to waste prevention,
desigining waste out of logistics and
transportation. More information at http://www.usereusables.com
Our Regional
Sustainability Dashboard
initiative continues to gain traction. It's
been adopted as a top five initiative of the
Oakland Partnership, and we've now joined
forces with
Star-Sports and the Low Carbon Diet to
combine visibility, performance feedback and
nuts-and-bolts implementation support. We
think it's a winning combination. More at http://www.natlogic.com/dashboards

Observed trends in green social networking
Social networks are facilitating rapid and
more widespread person-to-person exchange of
green techniques & ideas (Yahoo
Answers,
FiveLimes).
A few years ago, the average
person would have to spend hours researching
how to install a solar panel, for example.
Now people can see who else has already done
it and ask them for advice. We know that the
technology can work for business to business
too, so Natural Logic and Sun Microsystems
built a learning and sharing community into
the OpenEco
energy+carbon dashboard project.
Social networks are creating big-time buzz
for marketing green products and spreading
ideas. Users are leading by example & showing
their friends how green they are. (e.g. the I
Am Green
Facebook application).
Some leading green social networks are:
WiserEarth
-- Non-profit networking
dotherightthing.com
-- Users post news stories
about corporate social responsibility,
creating a positive and negative ranking
GUSSE -- A
network for exchanging urban
sustainability resources
Gaia
Community -- A social change community
for the
Lohas crowd
RiverWired
-- Green news, entertainment, and
community
Urth -- An
aggregator of blogs, news, video
and other conscious media
Because of the deluge of social networks,
several online green communities are building
themselves into larger, existing networks,
like Facebook
or OpenSocial,
which combine
elements of the other green networks. The
advantage of using a popular site like
Facebook is that users get information from
people that they know in real life, which
translates in to trusted sources for the
latest buzz on green products, news, causes
and events.
If you're already on Facebook, take a moment
to become
a "fan" of Natural Logic.
Oh, and check out the Carbon
Calculator Compendium -- the first of
many -- that we've put together over a Squiddo!

Our latest survey research
|
|
In collaboration with our friends at Re:Vision/Conscious
Brands (not to be confused with our
friends at Urban Re:Vision), we're looking at
the roles employees play to champion efforts
concerning the social and environmental
impacts of their companies.
The goal is to better understand how to get
-- or how to enable -- employees and leaders
to assess their current ESE (environmental,
social and economic) performance and take
effective action.
