Welcome to the latest news from Natural Logic--strategic advisors to the sustainable economy.

We're wrapping up a very exciting year. The culture of sustainability is moving rapidly into the business mainstream--and at a pace that's taken those of us who've been doing this for a lot of years by surprise. More and more companies are on board and are seeing the benefits of the work we've been doing for so long. 2007 was Natural Logic's busiest year to date, and we're strapping on our jets--and growing our capacity--for an even busier 2008.

And as our client work has grown, we've grown our staff this year as well. Two new folks joined us (you can read about our newest analyst, Nick Kordesch, below) and there'll be new staff and alliance announcements to come.

We've got new digs, too! We've outgrown our lovely rose garden office and we're moving into the NextNow Collaboratory in Berkeley--the perfect location for us. Joining with other future-thinking partners in a spacious and gracious location is just the new tone we want as we enter the new year.

We're planning a party in January--and we'd love to have you join us, and help us celebrate a very successful year. Come see our new space, meet our new folks or just join us for a great party. Stay tuned for details!

Special offer: Carbon Neutral Learning&trade -- last webinar of the year

Green Tomorrows webinar with Jamais Cascio, December 20
Green Tomorrow headline

Join futurist Jamais Cascio, in dialog with Natural Logic CEO Gil Friend, as he presents responses to global warming and ways to build a sustainable future. Using scenario planning, Cascio will explore four different narratives that explore the possible futures that could unfold as we transform our relationship to energy, resources and each other -- hopefully for the better.

Green Tomorrows, our last webinar of the year, promises to be full of surprises, solutions and challenges. I hope you'll join us. (Advance registration required.)

Natural Logic has been offering occasional webinars under its Carbon Neutral LearningTM brand. Our latest series, Coming to Grips with Carbon, featured the voices and wisdom of some of the best in the business: Kyle Tanger (Clear Carbon Consulting), Chris Pyke (CTG Energetics), Ricardo Bayon (author of Voluntary Carbon Markets) and Adam Davis (Ecosystem Marketplace). We're compiling this very successful program into a book, for release in early 2008.

Watch our website and our next newsletter for details of our 2008 Carbon Neutral LearningTM webinar program.

News from the sustainability revolution
Cockpit+Hands

Auberge Resorts operates a chain of luxury resorts across North America, providing a high-quality experience for customers. Auberge wants to improve on its "return on resources", so following our assessment of their Calistoga Ranch property this spring, Auberge has asked Natural Logic back to assess all its facilities to identify opportunities to reduce their footprint and improve efficiency and productivity in the areas of energy, water, waste, procurement and operations.

Carbon footprint & strategy: It's no surprise -- companies are thinking about climate change, and how to get a handle on their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Our work in this realm has been "heating up". For example, we're developing the first carbon footprint (GHG baseline analysis) for a large retailer (working again with our ally ClearCarbon Consulting), which will to guide the which the company will use to guide its emission reduction efforts, and integrate them into business and supply chain strategies.

EcoDentistry: Berkeley-based dental innovator Transcendentist, is launching the "Eco-Dentistry Association", and asked Natural Logic to build a comprehensive road map and analysis of practices and benefits -- for the bottom line of dental practices as well as the health of patients -- of "eco-friendly dentistry." Watch for forthcoming press reports based on Natural Logic's economic study.

Our Regional Sustainability Dashboard initiative has been entered in the Buckminster Fuller Challenge, and selected by the Oakland Partnership as one of its core projects.

Webinar: Coming to Grips with Carbon: Thank you for your rave reviews of our four-part webinar series, Coming to Grips with Carbon. Here's what participants said:

  • "Very effective"
  • "One of the best presenters I've ever heard - succinct, clear, knowledgeable"
  • "Clear, concise and effective"
  • 90.3% would recommend this series to their colleagues
There are other interesting projects that we can't talk about yet. Watch for future newsletters for details.

Small ribbed leaf

On December 20, Natural Logic hosts Jamais Cascio for Green Tomorrows Webinar -- a stimulating exploration of how the sustainability revolution will transform our politics, our economics, and our lives.

The process of building a sustainable future follows diverse paths, and the choices we embrace today will shape the future we encounter over the next 20 years. Cascio uses a scenario planning approach to look at what kinds of results we might get, and what kinds of opportunities and surprises those results could have in store. You'll find program information and registration links here.

Gil Friend will be in residence at Humboldt State University's Office for Economic and Community Development from February 7-9, 2008. Contact Brandon Hemenway (econdev@humboldt.edu) for program details and registration.

Gil will speak about sustainability dashboards and generative feedback at two upcoming events: the World Meter Design Congress, February, 2008 in San Jose CA, and at the EcoCity World Summit (the 7th International EcoCity Conference) during Earth Day Week, April 22-26, 2008 in Berkeley, California.

Some recent events: Gil Friend spoke about The Future of Innovation at Ex'pression College for the Digital Arts, and on the LEAF (Leadership in Ecological Applications and Functions) Rating System at the US Green Building Council's Green Build conference in Chicago (with Paul Kephart). David Jaber spoke The Value of Sustainability Panel at Net Impact's annual conference. Gil, David and Shana Gillis took part in Wal-Mart's historic CEO Sustainability Summit in Bentonville.

We'll be announcing other events soon. Contact us today to book a keynote presentation or workshop.

What they're saying about Natural Logic:

"We wanted to address a misconception of dentists that going "green" costs more, so it we chose Natural Logic to do an analysis showing that eco-friendly initiatives actually save money. The Natural Logic team came up with clear and compelling numbers showing the ROI and pay-back time for going "green." We plan to showcase their work through the Eco-Dentistry Association and know it will help us tremendously with our goal of transforming this industry."

Team talk

Thumbs Up

We're pleased to introduce you to our newest staff member:

Nick Kordesch joined the Natural Logic team this fall. He's using his experience in the areas of industrial ecology, environmental business strategy and corporate social responsibility to provide excellent support for our client work--notably with EcoDentist and Auberge Resorts. Nick's previous work experience includes research at UC Berkeley's Forest Pathology and Mycology Laboratory, an internship in Applied Materials' Environmental Solutions division and content writing at the green-web startup Greeniacs.com.

Nick received his Master's degree from the Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at UC Santa Barbara where he focused his studies on corporate environmental management and completed a master's thesis on scenario planning for Volvo Cars' Monitoring and Concept Center. Nick also holds a BS in environmental sciences from UC Berkeley.

Natural Logic is continuing to grow. We're looking for Practice Leaders, Consultants and Analysts to meet the needs of our expanding client base. We're also looking for a Lead Application Developer to build the web applications and other technologies that will keep Natural Logic on the leading edge of sustainability consulting. Please spread the word to worthy candidates.

That's the latest.

And give us a shout if there is any way we can help you:
chart your course,
read the signs and
make it go.
