American Red Cross

red cross

The American Red Cross blood supply has reached emergency levels with 50,000 fewer donations than expected in June. This shortfall leaves the Red Cross with half the readily available blood products on hand now than this time last year.

The Red Cross is calling on all eligible blood donors - now more than ever - to roll up a sleeve and give as soon as possible. All blood types are needed, but especially O positive, O negative, B negative and A negative in order to meet patient demand this summer.

An unseasonably early start to spring may be a contributing factor to this year's decrease in donations. Many regular donors got an early start on summer activities and aren't taking time to give blood or platelets. In addition, this year's mid-week Independence Day holiday has reduced the number of scheduled Red Cross blood drives. Many sponsors, especially businesses, are unable to host drives because employees are taking extended vacations.

Saluda Community Land Trust

Congratulations, Saluda Community Land Trust

The Saluda Community Land Trust received a "beautification" award from the
Polk County Appearance Commission for removing kudzu in numerous areas of Saluda and greatly improving the appearance of the corner of Ozone Drive and Thompson St., a highly visible site on the most important entry road into Saluda. The kudzu removal project took two years of weekly work with volunteers. The organization also coordinated with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, which owns the property, showing how cooperation between a state agency and a local land trust can greatly benefit a town. Nora Parks Anderson received the award for the land trust during the City of Saluda's June council meeting. Courtesy of Tryon Daily Bulletin.

SCLT will only be having one meeting in July. We are taking the first Wednesday off due to the Fourth of July celebration! We will be meeting again on the 18th at 3pm. Our meetings throughout the summer are held at the pavilion in McCreery Park.

Scheduled hikes are the first and third Sunday of the month. Wear appropriate clothing during this hot season, keeping in mind that there is poison ivy. You may encounter some bees and there may be times when your feet get wet. Remember to let your trail leader know if there are health issues that need to be addressed. Meet at the Saluda Library at 2pm and perhaps carpool to these walks.

July 15th is a trip to the Waters of Camp Creek lower trail. It's 2 miles and should take about 2 hours. This is a moderate walk on private property under conservation easement. For more information about these walks, please contact Chuck Hearon at 828-749-9886.

For more information about our endeavors, please be sure to pick up a pamphlet of trail walks (located at city hall and various businesses, including the Visitor's Center, sponsored by Saluda Business Association), call us at 828-749-1560 or check out our website saludaclt.org.

Here at The Party Place & Event Center each and every Saturday night will be booked with some awesome concerts and dance music.

On July 21, you don't want to miss "Crimson Rose."  Some of the best vocalists and musicians you will ever hear.  This group is from the Shelby and Kings Mountain area. They fill up the dance floor with their country, oldies disco, and southern rock music.  A must hear if you like female voices in harmony.  Kim and Debbie will certainly make you glad you came.  Then to wind down the month of July, don't miss a new mix of some of our past performers.  The band "7-Eighty-9" will be on stage July 28.  Do you remember the band Legacy or Southern Point from down in Upstate SC? Come see who you recognize and enjoy their new sound.  They specialize in the tunes we loved from the seventies, eighties, and nineties--some of the very best dance music and favorite oldies.   We can hardly wait to have them on stage again.

Paying Homage to a Really Good Man

cddWhen Charlie Fears arose to his 71st birthday on Thursday, June 21, 2012, it was just another long hard day of mowing grass and trimming weeds in the hot sun. For as long as Pam and I had known him, Charlie never seemed to let heat or cold stand in the way of work like most people would. He toiled throughout the year without any kind of overhead protection on his tractors, which would have offered some relief against the combination of blazing sun and sudden rain storms. Although he did wear long-sleeved shirts to protect his arms, the constant exposure to sun took its toll on his face and hands which were always darkly tanned and lined with wrinkles far beyond his physical age.

Some years back, Charlie retired after being employed for many years as a heavy equipment operator with a road building company in South Carolina. Never content to sit around, he started his mowing business in Saluda and for the rest of his life chose to live very frugally. That choice had nothing to do with the amount of money he possessed, because he had all the jobs he cared to take on. He just didn't care very much for worldly goods and I suspect most people would describe him as a simple common man. If so, he was certainly a common man filled with uncommon traits and values. Luckily for Saluda, he more than offset his frugal lifestyle by generously sharing his own kind of wealth in the form of kindness, favors, honesty, and loyalty to others. On several occasions, he confided in me stories about how those generous qualities led some folks to take advantage of him.

Charlie arose early and was often the first breakfast customer at Ward's Grill before heading out to tackle the day's work. He never ate heartily, which may have accounted in part for him being very trim. However, he loved a good hearty laugh when some of the regular customers or the staff teased him and was always prepared to respond in kind. You could tell that he really enjoyed that human interaction. And even though he had serious health problems, he refused to slow down one iota and continued his strenuous regimen of hard labor. It was the only lifestyle he had ever known.

A few years ago, Pam and I hired Charlie to maintain the field adjoining our Saluda home with the simple request that he keep it looking nice. More specifically I said, "Charlie, I want to keep the field well groomed so people can let their dogs play without worrying about snakes. We also want to be proud of the way it looks, sitting there next to the town cemetery. You decide when it needs mowing and mail me the bill." He never let me down. In fact, we became so trusting of each other that, rather than sending us a bill, he would just allow them to accumulate until our next trip to Saluda.

On Friday, the day after his birthday, Charlie asked another of our loyal Saluda friends, Jesse Sweezy, when we were expected back in Saluda, and stated that he would mow the field the following Monday since we would be arriving a few days later. Pam and I had also remembered his birthday the previous day with a card and told grill manager Melissa Wood that his food that day was on our ticket. Then all the girls sang "Happy Birthday" to him which he just loved.

Unfortunately Charlie never made it until Monday to mow our field as he had planned. The night following his birthday he laid down to rest and never got up again. His poor old tired heart had finally worn out. Now that he is interred in the town cemetery, within a mere one hundred feet of our field, I expect he will keep faithful watch to make sure our field is maintained to the standards he personally set.

Thank you for your friendship and many acts of kindness, Charlie. Now rest in the peace you have earned. We will remember you as a mighty good man full of common values too often lacking in today's society.

 Clark Thompson

Southern Comfort
by author, Cappy Hall Rearick

"It's difficult to think anything but pleasant thoughts while eating a homegrown tomato."  ~Lewis Grizzard

Some days are so-so; some are yo-yo. After spending the weekend in Atlanta living up to the "she shopped till she dropped" clich, I hated to leave. But home is home, so I dragged my tired tush to the car, turned the ignition key and discovered my battery preferred to stay in Hotlanna.

I dialed AAA and was told by an underage operator that my husband had forgotten to add my name to his account after we got married. The fact that the wedding took place nearly twenty years ago was of no consequence to the teenager who was more interested in texting her BFF.

"My car died!" First I wanted to throttle Babe visiting his sister in Pennsylvania and then the teenybopper popping gum in my ear.

After a pause that crawled into the next millennium, she said, "We cain't do nothing 'less he calls to verify you."

Good God.

"You mean that he's got to listen to elevator music for thirty minutes and you popping gum before you'll confirm my AAA membership?"

"Uh huh."

I should have hitchhiked to Atlanta.

I left an SOS on Babe's cell and then started reading, How To Love Yankees With A Clear Conscience. Eventually he called. "Keep reading. I'll call AAA."

"Get back to me in exactly five minutes, Babe," I said, "or you will pay."

Years later it seemed, he reported that AAA refused my card, but agreed to send out the troops.

"For twenty-five bucks." He cleared his throat. "Forty, if they tow it."

I was sending a prayer to the car god when a tall man with a Gabby Hayes beard appeared and nearly scared me into the middle of next week.

"Y'all need some hep?"

Giddyup!

Standing at my window spitting tobacco on the pavement was a fine Georgia gentleman offering to jump-start my battery. For free. His mama raised him right.

"You need to take this car for a full charge," he said, "and tell 'em to replace that raggedy belt or you'll meet your maker smack in the middle of I-16."

Concluding that Henry Ford must have been the Antichrist, I thanked my good Samaritan, quickly found a Pep Boys and shot in there like a silver bullet. They said I didn't need a belt or a battery.

Huh?

Good ol' pep boys. Thank you, God, for allowing me to be born on polite Southern soil.

But when I tried to start my car, nothing happened. The good ol' boys ended up replacing the battery they said I did not need.

"That battery was practically new," Babe shouted. "Still under warranty. Bring it home."

"That greasy, dead battery is not going in my car, Babe. I paid Larry, Moe and Curley ten bucks to toss it."

"Wonderful." His Yankee sarcasm did not escape my sensitive Southern Belle ears.

I crawled into my ailing car with the notched-up belt under the hood, (the one that might stop my clock on I-16.) I was tired and as frustrated as a Georgia Bull Dawg after losing the big game to the Gators. But all was not lost.

My Atlanta friends had loaded me up with garden gifts. Tomatoes, folks. red, ripe, juicy heirloom tomatoes - Georgia jewels, precious as rubies.

We expect homemade holiday treats with walnuts, raisins and pecans to comfort us in November and December; February brings chocolate in all its sweetness to pull us through dreary winter days. But in June and July, the homegrown tomato takes center stage to become the star of all comfort foods, the mother's milk of backyard gardens -Southern Comfort with the power to put the brakes on a yo-yo day.
