March 27th Luncheon:

No Guts, No Glory Communication Case Study

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta's Controversial Campaign to Stop Childhood Obesity Uses Tough Facts & Tough Talk To Break Down Barriers to Change

Tim Whitehead and his team seized an opportunity to test their mettle when they made the commitment to expose childhood obesity as a major health issue and improve the lives of Georgia's 2.7 million kids.

The Children's approach was risky and ambitious. The hard-hitting "Stop Childhood Obesity" ad campaign sparked national controversy, and the Strong4Life solutions campaign aims to ratchet down Georgia's 2nd highest childhood obesity ranking in the U.S. by offering simple steps to families.

There's nothing about the story of this campaign that isn't at the heart of what our profession at its most heroic is all about.  What Whitehead has to tell us will constitute a crash course in communications strategy, crisis communications and change management.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:

Terry Cerisoles, VP

Technology Communications

Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.

as interviewed by Lisa E. Williams

IABC/Atlanta Communications

Terry Cerisoles has been a member of IABC/Atlanta since 2005 and is one of the chapter's biggest cheerleaders. If you haven't met Terry, it is probably because she just hasn't gotten around to you yet. But stick around long enough and you will understand why she is the IABC/Atlanta Membership VP for 2012.

Why did you join IABC?

I joined IABC for the professional development, since I was not finding what I needed anywhere else. I needed examples of best practices in employee communications. I discovered IABC, and my first entrée was at a World Conference. The thing I remember the most was realizing that "I was in a room full of Terrys." I had found my people, and everybody I talked to spoke my language. I was thrilled! It was also at the World Conference that I met all of the Atlanta people. So instead of going local and working my way up, I went backwards from international to local.

What has been your involvement with IABC?

My first involvement was judging. I love the judging experience because I get to learn from my colleagues about the highest standards of my profession. It also gives me a glimpse...

IABC Discovery: Portal Knowledge is Power

by Don Mitchell

IABC/Atlanta Communications

They say knowledge is power, so why aren't you recharging your batteries at least once a month (if not more) at IABC's Discovery portal?

What is Discovery?
Discovery is an easily searchable online collection of IABC content that is aggregated in one place. That means you can go to one page to perform searches to access IABC's content, but you must be a member of IABC to have access.

Your searches will pull up all related content, whether an article, a research report or a how-to book. As you are searching, Discovery "thinks" for you, creating a tag cloud based on your search terms, giving you the option to delve deeper into an issue to find unexpected answers.  ...Read More

TAKEAWAY TIDBITS

The App Revolution is Here: Are You Ready?
by Sean Selman, IABC/Atlanta Communications

Mobile communications has changed daily life, and the app revolution has only just begun.

We aren't talking about an app to give you turn-by-turn directions to a new place in town. We're talking about an app that takes your website and turns it into a mobile information center.

Now is the time for corporate communicators and marketers to embrace this sea of change and consider how their organizations might tap into this new wave of connectivity, according to Branden Lisi of Object 9 Marketing.

Speaking at the Feb. 28 luncheon, Lisi outlined how communicators can use a mobile application strategy to engage a workforce, communicate with suppliers and reach out directly to consumers at the point of sale and beyond.

March Technology SIG: The Top 5 Mobile Myths
by Rookmin Maharaj, IABC/Atlanta Communications

At the March IABC/Atlanta Technology Special Interest Group, Mark Emery addressed the top, five mobile myths and the framework for constructing an enterprise-based, mobile strategy. Emery is a Mobile Marketing Strategist at Definition 6.

Myth #1: The belief that a mobile website is the same as one for desktop websites, but just on a smaller scale. "You have to account for device, OS, networks, add-ins," explained Emery, "and you have to manage the expectation by mobile users vs. desktop users."

"Truth is, a lot of companies are not satisfying users with their mobile sites," says Emery. The key to a successful mobile application is familiarization with different mobile devices and their usages, as well as consideration for the networks they run on.
