Volunteering Evolved into
Ongoing Commitment
for IABC President

by Amelia Pavlik

IABC/Atlanta Communications

When Jo Ann McCracken-Redding started her own communications consultancy firm seven years ago, she lacked one element that was crucial for success - she felt like she was out of touch with Atlanta.

"For years, I'd had a long and varied career that evolved from teaching English to corporate communications, and my clients had all been out of state," said McCracken-Redding, who is IABC Atlanta's 2012 president. "When I decided to work on my own, I wanted to find a circle of professionals who would serve as my colleagues."  ...Read More

Catalyst for Changing National Childhood Obesity

by Drake Osterhage

IABC/Atlanta Communications

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta launched their Strong4Life campaign in Atlanta late last year in response to the high childhood obesity rate in Georgia.

The campaign is a multifaceted movement designed to raise awareness of the epidemic status of childhood obesity in Georgia and equip families, physicians, and educators to help kids eat right, get active, get support, and have fun.

Children's has taken a leadership role in the dialogue surrounding the issue of childhood obesity. Their ads put forward challenging messages that redefine the issue of childhood obesity to focus on lifelong disease risks.  ...Read More

The Secret to Outperforming

Your Competitors
How Communication and Change Management Really Can Impact
the Bottom Line

by Elizabeth Byerly, Director, Rewards,

Talent and Communication, Towers Watson

There's no doubt in a communicator's mind that effective communication can make a big difference for an organization and its employees. But how do you convince senior leaders that communication is worth the investment? Towers Watson's 2011 - 2012 Change and Communication ROI Study proves that there really is a strong relationship between superior financial performance and effective communication and change management. In fact, organizations that are highly effective at both communication and change management are more than twice as likely to significantly outperform companies that are not highly effective in either area.

The study, which surveyed 604 organizations from around the world, also describes what companies that communicate and manage change effectively are doing and how these practices compare globally. Responses reveal that in today's challenging and dynamic business world, the best internal change managers and communicators guide their organizations by creating clarity, confidence and community.

Other key findings also prove the importance of effective communication and change management:
  • Among companies with high communication effectiveness, roughly two-thirds (62%) have a clearly articulated employee value proposition (EVP).
  • When compared to companies with low change and communication effectiveness, firms that are highly effective at change management are nearly five times as likely to create an integrated communication and change management strategy - and more than eight times as likely to continue to exhibit new behaviors and use new skills after changes are made.
  • Managers are playing a more important role in delivering messages, and nearly two-thirds of respondents report that managers are taking on more responsibility when it comes to communication with employees.
