INTRODUCING CIVIL WAR JOURNALS...
| |
Our inaugural Block-of-the-Month project is going to be CIVIL WAR JOURNALS by Judy Rothermel, Homestead Hearth, and Marcus Fabrics. The classic pieced blocks of this quilt, featuring an exclusive fabric line of the same name, can be finished as either one queen-sized quilt (82" x 104") or four wallhangings.
The Civil War history we will be sharing each month with this BOM concerns the children of the 1860's...how the war affected those who were most vulnerable...under-age soldiers involved in the fighting and the frightened ones who were home, fighting battles of their own, trying to cope with family responsibilities and basic survival. This quilt represents their stories, their little voices.

Optional 3rd Quarter Quilt

|
Every month, starting on MARCH 10 and MARCH 15 on the SECOND SATURDAY and FOLLOWING THURSDAY mornings at 10:30 am, Mary Jones will lead you on this journey...sharing the history, demonstrating the construction of each block, and sharing her tips for precision piecing that will lead you to success and completion of the quilt(s).
The fee schedule for this BOM will be as follows:
- first month will cost $59.90
- months 2-11 will cost $29.95 each
- month 12 is free!
- buy your backing with us at the end and save 15%
Sign up begins this Friday, February 10. WE WILL CUT OFF ENROLLMENT ON MARCH 1. You must come see this quilt in person...Mary Jones pieced this masterpiece and the quilting was done by Quality Quilting.
Don't let the size and illusion of complexity scare you away...Mary is a fabulous teacher and her monthly block break downs/tutorials will guide you on the road to piecing enjoyment and completion of either the one large quilt or the four smaller projects. There are also some built-in "catch up" months to help you stay on task.

FEATURING...THE JELLY ROLL RACE
|
 | |
Sorry - it's not this kind of jelly roll.
|
Although "JELLY ROLL RACE" sounds like our employees dashing off to the Zingerman's Bake Shop (just down the street...), it is really a quilt, a technique, a challenge, and pre-cut 2.5 inch strips all "jelly rolled" together into one fabulous, FAST and EASY quilt project!
We know you've seen Jelly Rolls...these were introduced by MODA and other fabric companies as a way to market entire fabric lines, one strip at a time. Those rolls are packaged in such an inviting way to show off every fabric to full advantage. We walk into quilt stores, see them from across the room, and get weak in the knees. They couldn't be better, even if they were dipped in chocolate!
We look at the price and think..."what a bargain...every fabric in the line WITHOUT buying a fat quarter bundle or, more expensive yet, yardage of each one (and we know how THAT would add up...we'd be crazy NOT to buy one or two, right??)
We buy them, get them home - "they are so PRETTY...how could I EVER unwrap the roll, much less actually USE them?!" Or maybe, we just don't really know what to do with them (that's me...).
Then came all kinds of books and patterns published to show us the way, and we thought - "nice...but could you make it easier and faster STILL??"

Well, how about almost an entire quilt top in 35 minutes! Introducing the Jelly Roll Race Quilt
(click to see the jelly roll race video) These gals (and I think I saw a guy...) are having WAY too much fun!
Customer Pam Knight has jumped the starting gun and already completed her Jelly Roll Race quilt with Moda's "Renaissance Redwork" roll. It's been quilted and she's probably already gotten it bound.
We are having our own JELLY ROLL RACE, refereed by Mary J on Monday, Feb 27. The starting gun goes off at 10:30 am and space is limited to 8 "drivers.". Please scroll down to see the class list.

LITTLE KNOWN WONDER TOOLS
| Every now and then, we will feature some quilting tools in the newsletter. One can certainly make quilts without buying each and every tool that comes to market, but some tools are really valuable and make the quilting experience easier and more enjoyable. Check out our notions wall to find these and other tools that might prove useful to you.
FINGER COTS - I'm sure you've seen these comical little rubber devices before, perhaps on the fingers of your bank teller, or maybe your office manager at work. There really is a practical purpose for them in your quilter's toolbox.
Sometimes I find it hard to grip my threaded needle when pulling it through the layers of fabric, after loading it up with stitches. I find it especially useful for hand quilting, where the needles are shorter (so there is less space to grab the needle). Products are sold that you pick up and use, like a pot holder. Well, I lose those, or the cat runs off with it, which makes it useless. I've also seen people use a piece of latex balloon. The finger cot is genius because I wear it on my index finger while stitching; it leaves my middle finger free to wear a thimble, if I desire. They come rolled up...I place it on my finger...unroll it, usually just down to the first knuckle, then when I stop stitching, I simply roll it back toward my fingertip to remove it. I find I can use each one a few times until it is torn beyond recognition. We carry sizes medium and large, they come a dozen to a pack and cost $3.25/pack.
QUILT DOME THREADED NEEDLE HOLDER - Now THIS is brilliant! The dome will hold at least 10 threaded, UNKNOTTED needles (I've been known to put 2 needles in each needle hole...sneaky, sneaky).
After threading a needle, you simply slide the needle, tip first, into one of the 10 needle holes. Then you put the thread tale in the little cleft and turn clockwise (while holding the base stationary) until the entire length of thread is wound up. Repeat with more threaded, unknotted needles until full. When you pull a needle out, simply pull gently until the thread tale is free and clear of the dome. Then knot and sew, sew, sew.
I like to thread my needles in good light, load up my quilt dome, then sew or quilt a while without the interruption of having to stop and thread needles. I simply place the empty needle in a needle hole until I am ready to thread 10 more. It also works well for sharps and embroidery needles as well as the betweens that are pictured here. The quilt dome is priced at $9.50. YLI 100% COTTON QUILTING THREAD - This a a great product for hand quilters! This thread is glazed, meaning it is coated to be less likely to knot while using. It also does not become untwisted as you sew with it, as some other brands do. The 400 meter spools sell for $4.50 each. |

TWO LOOKS FOR BUGGY BARN QUILTS...
| |
The Buggy Barn style of quilt making is really fun and easy...first you pick the quilt you want to make, then choose fat quarters in colors and patterns that make your heart sing. Next, you trace the cutting template on the dull side of a piece of freezer (butcher) paper. After following the quilt directions as to how to stack the pressed fat quarters, place the freezer paper cutting template, shiny side down, on top of the stack. Press with a hot, dry iron. Using a new rotary blade and a good ruler, rotary cut through all the layers to separate pattern pieces. Chain piece blocks as described in the pattern. Sounds like fun, right?
 | Norma M's examples of the "stack and whack" type of Buggy Barn quilts, "Posies" from Certifiably Crazy and "Baskets and Stars" |
Norma M would like to teach a class on this style of quilt making. She would like every student to pick the quilt that tempts them from Buggy Barn's many books and separate patterns. The stack and whack general directions are similar for all the quilts of this style.
Watch for details about this class as we measure interest.

"Garden Party" from Buggy Barn Crazy for Applique, pieced by Wendy Ward and custom machine quilted by Virginia Lewis of Quality Quilting
|
The other kind of Buggy Barn quilt experience is their beautiful machine appliqued patterns. We have a beautiful example of this style hanging in the shop now, "Garden Party" from Buggy Barn Crazy For Applique. More books containing the full-sized patterns have been ordered and should be in the store for the weekend. The quilt features a whimsical outdoor scene containing owls, birds, cats, a tree, etc.

"Primitive Gatherings offers "Primitive Pinwheels (Simplified)" as a 'pattern plus' kit at $24.94. The smallest Twister template is included, along with lovely "cheater" and border fabrics to make this dynamic wall hanging. ZIPPY, STRIPPY BAGS ARE HERE...AGAIN!
|
We have samples of 3 sizes of these great bags. These cute samples caused the patterns to sell like hot cakes during the Grand Opening Celebration and Sale. Many more patterns have been re-ordered and should be here for the weekend, along with the patterns for other little zippered bags from the Atkinson...the "Lollipop Bag", "Cash and Carry" little coin purses, and a cute lunch tote (and wine tote!). They are super easy to make, and we have just the right handmade button to complete the job!
But the really exciting thing is that we have ordered the ENTIRE zipper collection from Atkinson so we have the perfect zipper in every color with which to make these exciting bags. We will be offering bag-making classes as soon as we can line them up!
