Windows 7

September 7, 2011

In this issue...

Stack of New Year's party hatsarticleoneGear Up: 2012 is Only 76 Working Days Away.

Working to meet your end-of-year goals? Planning for 2012? Us, too. With only 76 working days until Christmas (and 56 until Thanksgiving), it's time to step up the pace and get serious about your Windows 7 migration.

And since we're counting...support for Windows XP is over on April 8, 2014.   While it may seem like you have plenty of time, it is never too early to incorporate Windows 7 planning into your goals and initiatives for 2012.   The foundation of a successful OS migration is in the planning. Once you know your challenges you can budget for them and spread your Windows 7 spend over multiple budget cycles if needed.

ArticletwoHow Savvy IT Professionals will be Using their End-of-Year Spend.
If you have funds to use before the end of the year and/or want to spread your Windows 7 migration costs across multiple budgets, consider these three initiatives to get a jump on your prep in 2011 and ahead on your migration for 2012.

1.  Get a Windows 7 Proof of Concept for FREE:
Whether you need to make the case for Windows 7 in your organization or just need a jumpstart, a Windows 7 Proof of Concept (POC) is the best way to go. In five days, we will assess readiness, address application compatibility options, create a basic deployment image and provide you with direction on the best deployment method. And here's the best part: if you are a Microsoft Enterprise customer you could get the POC for FREE. That's right - FREE - you can't get any more budget-friendly than that.

 2. Tackle the tough applications ahead of time: If vendor compatibility certifications are keeping you from moving forward with your migration - or just keeping you up at night - explore virtualization. A 10-day Application Inventory, Validation and Remediation package not only conquers your application inventory issues, it offers a compatibility evaluation of your apps and presents virtualization and other creative options.

3.  Assess Your Training Needs: Training and support are mega-spend areas in your Windows 7 migration. A two-hour Training Assessment will provide an overview of your training options, delivery of training and communications plans, sample communications, and an overview of your potential issues. Congratulations to last week's Migration Outtakes winner!

"We had an executive who had a GPS program installed on the laptop he used for sailing.  He wanted us to upgrade him and test the GPS tool before he went sailing in the Carribbean.  He didn't have time to learn the new tool.  We were afraid he would end up in the middle of nowhere."

What are your biggest Windows 7 hurdles? Your strangest Windows 7 moments? The oddest app you really didn't want to find? Tell us. We'll feature your biggest concerns and your most memorable Windows 7 migration moments (anonymously, of course) in our Migration Outtakes section in upcoming ETT Windows 7 newsletters.

Bang for Your Buck - Cost-Saving Tip(s) of the Week

Go ahead, take advantage: Depending on the timing of your migration, the end of the year can be a great time to get ahead on your Windows 7 planning and utilize available internal resources.

TIP:  If someone on your team has down time, have them help with your application inventory project. (Once you have a plan as to how you are going to gather application info you can plug different resources into pieces of it.)

TIP:  If you are planning to migrate to Windows 7 early next year, consider having a brown bag lunch session with a Windows 7 Proof of Concept machine to get feedback from users. End of year is often the ideal time for this - just make sure you have a set of objectives before you ask people for their feedback!

And speaking of taking advantage - feel free to use us anytime to jumpstart your planning, provide some real-life advice, give you a sanity check, or work through your toughest challenges.
