ArticletwoDo the Math: Accurate Application Inventory + Expert Assessment = Your True Application Compatibility Costs
Many of our customers cite application compatibility as their number one concern in planning a Windows 7 migration.  Rightly so. With so many demands on your time, it's hard to feel you have a true inventory of the apps in use across all levels of your organization, let alone evaluating their compatibility with Windows 7.

But an accurate Windows 7 budget relies heavily on having an accurate application inventory.

Randy Frum

Our Expert

Randy Frum, one of our Application Packaging Experts and a certified Windows 7 Desktop Administrator, offers these initial steps to an air-tight inventory:

1. Make sure you have the right tools and adequate resources to produce a comprehensive inventory. You may need more manpower in the field to uncover applications, or you may need some extra help leveraging tools like Altiris to help figure out what's on the desktop. If you don't have the resources, you'll need to add this to your budget.

2. Assess your application packaging tools and resources. You may find that your in-house capabilities do not align with the number of applications you've discovered in your inventory.

3. Do a complete assessment of your inventory for application compatibility and decide which applications you'll virtualize, which you'll upgrade, and which just don't belong in your organization. Altiris shops can also leverage their Altiris investment to help with virtualization.

Once you've done the three steps above, you'll have a clearer picture of an important part of your Windows 7 budget. For more budget advice, sign up for our upcoming Windows 7 budgeting webinar.

Thanks, Randy!

Bang for your buck
ArticlefourBang for Your Buck - Cost-Saving Tip of the Week

As Randy mentions above, building an accurate and prioritized application inventory (and compatibility list) is a critical component of both a successful rollout and a solid budget. While there are many ways to build your lists,  you'll want to ensure you've done it thoroughly and accurately. This, friends, is not a place to cut corners.

Perhaps the best way to get the most from your application dollars is by purchasing a fixed-price application assessment. For one set cost, you can have experts complete a full application inventory, validation and remediation, taking the guess work (and grunt work) out of pulling together the important information you need.

Not only will you get the focus and resources, you'll also benefit from the experience and knowledge of Eden Experts who have done this in organizations just like yours. You might even save yourself some money and headaches down the road.
