There was a question and answer period with Rep. Workman. Several very good points were made by members and will be incorporated into the new alimony reform bill for 2013.
The meeting was much more than legislation and a discussion of the financial impact of lifetime alimony. There's the emotional toll as well. Three women who attended said cannot marry their partner and risk their financial future to help pay the ex-wife. Others told of medical issues, division of families, and went on to describe the lifestyles of the alimony recipient verses the alimony payer. Lifestyles are far from similar, with the payer working long hours or multiple jobs while the recipient makes no effort and is on a lifetime vacation. There are men lifetime alimony recipients now, doing the same thing...a lifetime vacation.
One gentleman attending said this was the first time he had been out of his house since last November when his divorce was final. A lifetime sentence for committing no crime is difficult for some people to comprehend. Abuse like this should not happen in America.
Rep. Workman is running unopposed and cannot accept political donations. His cause to help injured veterans, "Workman's Warriors" will hold their fundraising 5k Run next weekend. This would be a good place to show your gratitude for what Rep. Workman is doing. Click Here for more information on Workman's Warriors and contribute to show your appreciation.
WHAT IS FAR'S GOAL WITH ALIMONY REFORM IN FLORIDA?
Go to the FAR website to see read our objectives with alimony legislation. While you're there, look over the website again. There are many upgrades, additional articles, video's, comments and opportunities to get involved. Share it with your friends and family. Then volunteer to help and get active.
We hope to have the final draft of the bill ready shortly. Any change has to be carefully reviewed so we don't have unintended consequences.
FAR's Regional meetings are very important. The event we had in Naples was very successful. Because of contacts at that meeting, FAR will have a booth at Florida's OB/GYN Convention next weekend in Orlando.
85% of ob/gyn doctors go through divorce. They have experienced our "Family" courts. Don't jump to conclusions about doctors! Many times the doctor was not the one to end the marriage. If you have "doctor" in front of your name, sometimes you are an alimony target and will be more likely to pay permanent alimony. Thanks to one of the doctors for sharing the cost of the booth with FAR and "working the crowd" to get the alimony buzz going around the convention hall.
We'll let you know how it goes. It should be an interesting experience!
