The Contemporary Guitarist
Methods for the Worship Musician
For 26 years now, the Southern Territory has produced quality music and educational material designed to enhance worship. With the inception of Vision 2020 where we are striving to have live music and arts in every Corps by the year 2020, there is also a renewed effort to create resources that reflect the variety and breadth of worship mediums used in our services today. To that end, the Territorial Music and Creative Arts Education Department, in cooperation with the Arkansas/Oklahoma Divisional Music and Arts Department, is proud to announce the release of our newest resource, The Contemporary Guitarist: Methods for the Worship Musician. Written by Jimmy Cox, Divisional Corps Youth Worship-Evangelism & Outreach Director for the AOK Division, The Contemporary Guitarist is a complete guitar method series for those who wish to become an effective worship musician! This course is for anyone, even if you've never touched a guitar before. The book includes a CD containing all songs and exercises and an accompanying DVD, featuring Marty Mikles, Jimmy Cox, and Adely Charles. Using the DVD is like having your very own instructor for every lesson! Level 1 includes: how to play all common open chords, complete with diagrams, photos, and exercises; songs by transMission, one of the Salvation Army's premier praise bands, as well as other classic hymns; suggestions for other popular songs that can be played at different points in the book; and QR code links to extra online content. By the end of this book, you will have a basic repertoire of songs you can use for worship. Once you finish with Level 1, you'll want to continue with Level 2 which is slated to be released next year and then Level 3 which will follow soon after. In its draft form, this resource has already been used in regular Corps music programs; School for Performing Arts (SPA) programs; and Divisional Music Conservatories. A few divisions, in supporting Vision 2020, have even had full weekend retreats dedicated to teaching this curriculum to participants that represent every corps in the division. It has now been revised and published, making it available to everyone! The Contemporary Guitarist: Methods for the Worship Musician is a great addition to the list of resources made available by The Salvation Army USA South. Through this book, we hope that you will become a skilled worship artist, so that you can bring your very best to the Lord with the music that you play! For more information or to order you can contact the Southern Territory Trade Department (1-800-STORE-SA). The book is also now available through J. W. Pepper. ~ Leon Kirkpatrick |
TMI 2012 The Southern Territory's Territorial Music Institute, otherwise known as TMI, is an 8-day intensive music & creative arts camp held annually at the end of each summer. With a lengthy history, TMI has helped to produce quality music and creative arts leaders across the Southern Territory and around the world for the past 60 years. With a wide range of instrumental, vocal, and creative arts instruction, and a variety of music and arts leadership seminars, TMI has been blazing the trail for Salvation Army music and creative arts leadership and instruction globally. Special guests James & Marge Curnow joined the staff and delegates from around the territory and beyond for a wonderful week of music, creative arts, & worship at Camp Hoblitzelle in Midlothian, Texas. If you want to see what happened at TMI, check out the webcasts of some of our programs! |
2013 Singing Company Competition

Finale Tips: Expression Categories
Beginning in Finale 2009, the Expression Tool was redesigned to incorporate Expression Categories. This simple redesign can allow you to work much faster and with better looking output, yet many people still do not use this tool effectively.
Because most text expressions share many characteristics, the categories are an excellent upgrade. For example, if you want all dynamics to look the same, put all dynamic markings in the "Dynamics" category. This allows you to set the font and alignment rules for all dynamics in one place, keeping you from manually aligning dynamics as you had to before.
To set the font and alignment rules, select the expression tool and double-click anywhere on the staff. When the Edit Selection dialogue box appears, click "Edit Categories" in the bottom left corner.
Certain categories (Tempo Marks, Tempo Alterations, & Rehearsal Marks) include a special command called "Score Lists." These allow you to create lists of which parts or staves that the mark appears. For instance, on the score, you only want the initial tempo mark above the top staff (and maybe one or two others), but it must appear on every part. With a staff list, you only need to input the marking once, and it will appear everywhere you defined at once (top of score and all parts).
If you want to make an exception for individual items within a category, click on the expression and then click "Edit." In the new dialogue box, uncheck the box by "Use [Name] Category Fonts." Then you can change the font in the drop down menu underneath the check box.
If you always use the correct category for a text expression you can save yourself hours of work. Don't simply dump everything in the miscellaneous category!
Save customized expression lists in your templates, so you don't need to update them each time. Expression lists can also be saved (File>Save Library & check "Text Expressions") and loaded into other files. For full instructions on how use the Expression Categories, check your user manual.
