The Great Frame Up

The Longmont Artists' Guild is grateful to the Great Frame Up for many years of support and friendship.
The Great Frame Up Gallary shows our art each year and the owner, Dave Iannazzo, generously permits us to use the showroom space after hours for our monthly meetings and demonstrations.
Guild artists have also held one-man shows in this attractive gallary.

May 2011 Newsletter |

You may have noticed the many new faces in our guild. Our guild is growing at a rapid rate because you, the members, make newcomers feel welcome. Great job everyone!
The guild has had a non-profit status for less than a year. And already we are going into areas and doing things that have not been possible before. One of those areas is grant writing and behind the scenes is Kate Demke. She is taking classes, gathering information, and filing grant proposals. One of the grants Kate was applying for was getting funds for new show panels. We have 20 panels now and if it weren't for the help of BAA, we would not have had enough panels for our shows. Thanks Kate for your hard work on the grants!
St. Stephen's and LAG wants to help artists in these hard economic times by keeping the percentage low. So the artist will receive more money for their artwork. Also, new this year in the show, is prize money for 1st place and Best of Show winners.

FEATURED LAG MEMBERS
|
We are featuring two LAG members each month who have volunteered their time and energy to LAG, helping in some way with our guild's events, shows or various goals. Here are the nominated members for May 2011:
Joan Rhodes:
Nominated by Lynn Daignault: I wish to nominate Joan Rhodes. She literally rescued the Guild about two years ago, when the current president had to step down for health and family reasons. She has singlehandedly held down the position of president as well as director of publicity. Because of her hard work we now have our non-profit status and are eligible for grants and insurance which helps us use different venues. Her warm and cheerful demeanor has made our demos and board meetings a pleasure to attend.
About Joan Rhodes:
Joan has been married for 40 years to her wonderful husband Terry. Together they participate in several activities. They are active in the Colorado Senior Pro Charity Rodeo Association that puts on a rodeo to raise money for charities. They compete in the team roping and train their own horses. They also do some mounted shooting and just started cattle sorting competition. Joan had a career in dentistry for 25 years. After retiring she trained a therapy dog for Longmont United Hospital that lead to working in their adult day care as an assistant activity director for three years. A native of Spokane, Wash. she and her husband have called Colorado 'home' for the past 32 years.

Joan started sculpting as a woodcarver and then in the last 5 years
has been working in clay and casting her work in bronze. It is her aspiration to share the joy she feels and sees in daily life through her sculptures
Colleen Hoerner:
Nominated by Joan Rhodes: Colleen Hoerner is my selection. She is a BAA board member and a member of LAG. She helped me so much last year learning how to put everything together for the LAB/BAA show. She was the person that started the show at the fairgrounds. Colleen has been managing the panels For LAG/BAA artists.
About Colleen Horner:
Colleen Hoerner was raised in a small town in Nebraska, and then attended college, first in Missouri, then Lincoln, NE., and finished with a BFA from C.U. in Boulder. After meeting her future husband in Estes Park, they married and lived in Boulder for 8 years, Gunbarrel for 13 years, and then to Niwot where they have lived for 19 years. She started doing more artwork after her two children were in high school, switching from watercolor and colored pencil to pastel in 1995. She and her husband have run the Alpine Trail Ridge Motel and the Sundeck Restaurant in Estes Park seasonally for forty years.
She joined the Boulder Art Association in 1994 after attending a member's show at Crossroads Mall. After serving as secretary for the BAA for six years and chairing member and national shows for nine years, she retired from the active board and is now on the BAA's advisory board. In 2009, she joined the LAG after enjoying collaborating with them for several previous years on the presentation of the joint BAA/LAG members' show at the fairgrounds.
Although trying many mediums, pastel has become her first love. She has been fortunate to appear in the Pastel Journal, the Artists Magazine, American Art Collector, Best of Pastel, Paint America Top 100, Jackson Richeson International 75, and to receive the BCAA Milash Award.

LAG EVENTS
|
| APRIL DEMONSTRATION DIANE GOLDENSTEIN - APRIL'S LAG DEMO: LAG was once again treated to a fabulous demonstration of creativity and artistic expertise. Diane wowed our members, showing us the techniques she uses to make a beautiful, abstract sculpture. She shared her process of beginning the piece, demonstrated how she "sculpts" the shape and then talked about the finishing touches. We are so fortunate to have someone as talented as Diane in our LAG membership. Thank you Diane!

LAG is so grateful for all the wonderful folks, both St. Stephen's volunteers and LAG members, who worked so hard, side-by-side, with set-up, take-down, gift shop, artist reception, brochures, name tags, postcards, free seminars and free artist demonstrations. There is so much to do to put a show like this together and we are truly fortunate to have such good people who give up their time to make it all happen. Special thanks to Gretchen Heuring, for being the one who had the vision to start the St. Stephen's Show in 2007, with LAG and St. Stephens joining forces in 2009. Gretchen still graciously carries the responsibility for it's production every year since. Thanks Gretchen, and all the volunteers for making this show one of the best ever!

"HELLO LAG MEMBERS, Just a reminder that the Prospectus for the 2011 BAA/LAG Art Show is now on line. Please download a copy and submit your application by May 11, 2011 5PM. Your application must be postmarked by this date. LAG Members who are entering the 2011 BAA/LAG Art Show can now work off their two hour work commitment by signing up to solicit venues for donations (cash preferably) or soliciting food vendors for our reception. As you are aware when holding an event at a Boulder County facility, their rules state that any food being brought to the event and offered to the public, must be from a restaurant or caterer, or brought from grocery stores (fully protected before purchase). (Such as salad trays which have a plastic cover, sushi with plastic cover, meat tray with plastic cover, etc. This is the sort of thing that needs no handling other than to take the cover off and serve.) 1. A $25 donation will allow the contributor to have their name/business name on the program and vendor's thank you poster. Being a non-profit 501(c)3 our tax number allows them to use apply this donation as a tax write-off to a non-profit association. If a food vendor is donating food for the reception, ask that they give you the estimate in writing. We would give them our tax number. To further entice them to donate, they may give us brochures advertising their business which could be placed on the table right next to the donated food. We are trying to keep our costs at a reasonable level while affording our members this opportunity to show and sell their art. 2. If interested in signing up for this work commitment, please contact either Diane Wood (303)678-7456 email address diane@woodcolorado.com, or contact Diana Tripp (303) 442-3901 email address dianatripp@gmail.com 3. We will need 3 volunteers to pick up, put up and take down signage for the 2011 Art Show. Please call and or email Diane Wood or Diana Trip. This volunteer position will count toward your working hours commitment for the show. This annual show features some of the best artists in Boulder County. Together we can display our talent and further make the community aware of our talented artists. Thanks for contributing to the success of our show. Diane Wood
