March 2011 Newsletter

|
President's Corner:
|
Our mission for 2011 is to create an atmosphere that helps people to feel special. Your board members have been working hard to accomplish this. We now have two websites for better communication, monthly demonstrations for learning new ideas, and workshops to learn new techniques and foster fellowship. We have a new format for the newsletter to better inform members about upcoming events and other news. We are putting on more art shows for places to display your talents, and name tags so that we can get to know each other.

ARTWALK LONGMONT | |
Greetings Artists:
I would like to invite you to participate in the 2011 ArtWalk season and help us celebrate our 15th anniversary! The ArtWalk board of directors and I are committed to making this season an excellent one and are looking forward to working with our talented local community of artists.
Last year we had over 24,000 attendees combined at all three events. Our special events, like Art in Action and the Children's Art Tent sponsored by the Longmont Studio Tour, were very popular. In 2010 we also saw a large increase in art sales during the night of ArtWalk and the surrounding weeks.
Some of the highlights of 2011 will be:
ˇ Special events and press coverage of ArtWalk's 15th Anniversary
ˇ A 25th Anniversary celebration of the Old Firehouse Art Center during the July 15 event
ˇ Each participating artist will exhibit for a minimum of 15 days
ˇ Art Through the Lens Photo Contest/Exhibition during the September 16 event
We are accepting applications for the May 20, July 15, and September 16 events. The deadline for the May event, or to be considered as one of the three featured artists for the season, is April 1. The deadline for the July 15 event is June 1. The deadline for the September 16 event or Art Through the Lens Photo Contest is August 1. Please note we will be accepting applications in all mediums for the September event in addition to entries for the photo contest.
ArtWalk will be using an electronic registration system this year. This new system will allow us to increase the visibility of participating artists on the ArtWalk website including a new Artist Archive page that will allow ArtWalk attendees to view past participants and access their websites directly for years to come. To apply please visit our website at www.artwalklongmont.org and click on the call for entries link.
I would like to thank you ahead of time for participating in ArtWalk; the many talented artists along the Front Range are what make ArtWalk such a great community event. As always, we appreciate any comments or feedback you have to help make this a successful season of integrating Life and Art.

PLEIN AIR ART EXHIBIT | |
Artists sought to participate in
Plein Air Art Exhibit
Boulder County, Colo. - The Boulder County Parks and Open Space Foundation is seeking artists to participate in the Plein Air Art Exhibit featuring county open spaces.
Artists will join in a two-week "paint-out" from June 1-14, during which they will have access to Boulder County Parks and Open Space agricultural, prairie, forested, and aquatic open space areas to produce artwork for the exhibit. Additionally, artists will be allowed in certain restricted open space areas during this time.
Interested artists are asked to submit application materials - including an entry form, $20 entry fee and three digital images of outdoor art - by March 30. Artists must be Boulder County residents.
Complete application information and details are on the Plein Air Art Show page of the Boulder County website.
The exhibit benefits the Parks and Open Space Foundation, a not-for-profit fundraising partner of Boulder County Parks and Open Space.
"Living in such an athletic and health focused community, we are all very familiar with our recreational users of open space," said Karen Imbierowicz, Partnership Coordinator for Boulder County Parks and Open Space. "We are less familiar with the artist community who quietly set up their easels on the side of the trail and capture the aesthetic beauty of the place we call home.
"Through this process we hope to encourage the relationship between the artist community and our local public lands," Imbierowicz said.
"Plein air" is defined as the act of painting outdoors. The focus of the artwork is usually landscapes and the artwork is usually created in one block of time in the field, so the immediacy of the moment is captured.

Help Kids in Haiti | |
Dr. Peter Schmid, our wonderful Longmont plastic surgeon, gave a program at Kiwanis club about his trip to Haiti 3 weeks after the earthquake. His photos of the conditions were astounding, ones you would never see on TV. He is going back in May and said it would be wonderful to be able to take some paper and crayons down for the kids to have a little something to do. Actually over 2 million people live in Potr au Prince with really nothing. It would be wonderful if members could contribute some of these items for the kids. Please bring paper and crayons to the Art Guild meetings in Feb., March, and/or April. Or phone Becky Everitt for pickup-up at 303-651-0644. Coloring Books are also welcome, but small, tablet types, nothing thick and big as they are too difficult to transport and distribute. Also, no large reams of paper, just small pads or loose paper please. Crayons are very important!
Thank you in advance...

SEAKR FOUNDATION

The Seakr Foundation was founded to help military families who have lost a partner in Afghanistan or Iraq. With the support of LAG we want to put even higher quality art into the auction and have a few artists present to talk about their work. Here is how we can help them:
1. Start working on a piece to be donated for the October fundraiser. All items are tax deductible but need to be in Heather Coen's possession by September 1, 2011.
2. Donate your time and energy to help set-up and run this event.
3. Help Heather in the weeks before the event.
4. Buy tickets to the fundraiser and get your friends to buy tickets too. Last year the tickets were $190 a piece with all profit going to the families and the rest covering the venue, food and decor. The event should occur in the first two weeks of October in downtown Denver at a major hotel.
5. Pass the word along to anyone you know about this cause and donate on-line.
You can find out more about Seakr Foundation at
http://www.seakr.com/about/foundation.html
You can also call Ray Anderson or Melissa Coen for more information about the event and your participation, their numbers are listed at the bottom of the webpage. You can also contact Heather Coen at (970)669-6123 or (970)361-4268 or email at
