President's Corner:
|

A restarted feature of the Guild is our workshops. Your board members have been working on providing a variety of workshops in different mediums. This gives the members an opportunity to expand their skills and try something new. We are encouraging people to explore new areas and have fun learning new topics and learning new techniques. These workshops also provide fellowship and a place to meet new people. So sign up for a workshop and you may discover hidden talents and in the process make some new friends.

Diane Goldenstein - April Demo
| |
Abstract & Non Representational Artist, Sculpturist, and Muralist Diane Goldenstein will be the featured artist for the Longmont Artist Guild's monthly demonstration on Wednesday April 13, 2011 at the Great Frame Up 430 Main Street 6:30 to 9:00 PM with program starting at 7:00 PM. Free and Open to the Public.
Ms Goldenstein is an award winning sculpturist and abstract artist. She studied fine arts at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has studied locally with watercolorist Mr. Ron Smalley. She will give an overview on the process of creating three-dimension sculpture. Artist Statement: My training has been sculpture and wood carving. I experiment with different acrylic techniques to obtain the affect and appearance of materials like metal, clay and organic matter. I love the freedom of abstract painting and have combined it with my natural tendency to sculpt. The resulting painting leaves the observer to have an almost uncontrollable urge to stroke the painting. Since sculpture is meant to be handled, I have succeeded in inviting the observer into participating in a sculpture experience. Diane Goldenstein |

Kate Demke - Printmaking
Artist Demo March 9th
Kate treated us to a fascinating demonstration of Printmaking. She talked about different techniques including intaglio, lino, etc.
Her award-winning examples were amazing, and she demonstrated the numerous steps it takes to create a final print.
She even got our LAG president, Joan Rhodes, busy making a print.
Thank you Kate for such a great demo and learning experience!
LAG ART WORKSHOPS

Becky Everitt
Watercolor Workshop
March 19, 2011
Becky Everitt conducted her second LAG Member's watercolor workshop at the Longs Peak United Church in Longmont. The class was full with around 15 or more students. Becky is well known in the community and with the LAG Guild as a very accomplished and award-winning artist, using watercolors, pastels and other various mediums. Everyone had a great t time at her workshop, learned a lot and really enjoyed spending Saturday afternoon with other artists, sharing their passion of creating art.
Thanks for sharing your expertise, Becky!
Her next class is May 13th at the Longs Peak United Church again, from 1 - 3 pm. It is only $12, not including supplies, and is for anyone who wants to paint in watercolor, beginners included. She would like to have people register first so she knows how many students will be there...space is limited! It's an amazing value for so much instruction and fun!
If interested in Becky's next class, please contact her at:

 Featured LAG Member's | |
We are featuring two LAG members each month, starting with this April newsletter, who have volunteered their time and energy to LAG, helping in some way with our guild's events, shows or various goals. For our first amazing, honored members, we have chosen:

Mike Reynolds:
Nominated by: Kate Demke and Joan Rhodes:
Kate: "The member that sticks out for me is Mike...she is a really neat woman I helped setting up grids and hanging work at last year's St. Stephen's. She had the best attitude and she stuck it out to the end working hard.
Joan: "She has done a lot for the guild. She printed up the show tags for the last meeting and the arts booklet last year for the LAG/BAA show. Was president for three years and was one of the people that worked on getting us the 501C3".
Mike Reynolds/Artist Statement:
I grew up in Boulder, Colorado, but have lived in Longmont for more than 10 years. I have been a member of the Longmont Artist's Guild for a lot of that time, and love this organization. It has given me friends, opportunities and knowledge in many different forms of art.
I have been an artist all my life (that I can remember). Having three children did slow down the amount of work done in my middle years. Now, I am trying to make up for lost time.
Acrylics are my primary medium. However, I am presently getting reacquainted with Oils. Watercolor, Pen and Ink, and most other mediums have been in my endeavors at one point or another. I enjoy every type of art I have done. Landscape is the subject matter I tend to paint, but have been known to do still life, animals and portraits. Whatever the subject, I try to bring an intimate look at my subject, even if it happens to be a wide vista. The world is a glorious place to be, and I would like to transmit that concept to the viewer.
Vince Heuring:

Nominated by Joan Rhodes:
Vince Heuring spent his early years in Cincinnati, Ohio. His photographic avocation began as a young man many years ago with an Argus C3 35mm camera. He got photographic and darkroom experience working with a 4x5 Speed Graphic camera photographing people and events. His current film-based SLR is a Nikon 8008s which he still uses for shooting slides. His digital camera is a Canon G10, while he waits for the Nikon D7000 to arrive.
His current interest is in the theory of composition, in both photography and painting. He is focusing on factors that influence the way viewers gaze at and value images, and the extent that the artist can influence that gaze.
He received his BS from the University of Cincinnati and his PhD from the University of Florida. He moved to Boulder in 1984 where he joined the faculty of the Electrical, Computer, and Energy Engineering department at CU-Boulder specializing in Computer Engineering and Design.

If you would like to nominate a member for their outstanding work LAG, please submit your nomination to: board@longmontartistsguild.org

Admission is Free. Pecha Kucha (Japanese: ペチャクチャ, IPA: [pet͡ɕa ku͍̥t͡ɕa][1], chit-chat) is a presentation methodology to organize the presentation order of an event, such as in a Pecha Kucha Night. PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It's a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace. Mr. Gallegos' topic is: Understanding and Appreciating Abstract & Non Representational Art.
Debbie Rocchi: Debbie was recently given the opportunity to illustrate a seed packet for Botanical Interests in Broomfield. She was paid, too! She will have the seed packet ready to show sometime in June... (McKana Giant Blend of Columbines plus a hummingbird was the theme) And....she wasn't even looking...the CEO saw one of her detailed and colorful bird pastels at the Creative Framer and that is how this all happened! "HELLO LAG MEMBERS, Just a reminder that the Prospectus for the 2011 BAA/LAG Art Show is now on line. Please download a copy and submit your application by May 4, 2011 5PM. Your application must be postmarked by this date. LAG Members who are entering the 2011 BAA/LAG Art Show can now work off their two hour work commitment by signing up to solicit venues for donations (cash preferably) or soliciting food vendors for our reception. As you are aware when holding an event at a Boulder County facility, their rules state that any food being brought to the event and offered to the public, must be from a restaurant or caterer, or brought from grocery stores (fully protected before purchase). (Such as salad trays which have a plastic cover, sushi with plastic cover, meat tray with plastic cover, etc. This is the sort of thing that needs no handling other than to take the cover off and serve.) 1. A $25 donation will allow the contributor to have their name/business name on the program and vendor's thank you poster. Being a non-profit 501(c)3 our tax number allows them to use apply this donation as a tax write-off to a non-profit association. If a food vendor is donating food for the reception, ask that they give you the estimate in writing. We would give them our tax number. To further entice them to donate, they may give us brochures advertising their business which could be placed on the table right next to the donated food. We are trying to keep our costs at a reasonable level while affording our members this opportunity to show and sell their art. 2. If interested in signing up for this work commitment, please contact either Diane Wood (303)678-7456 email address diane@woodcolorado.com, or contact Diana Tripp (303) 442-3901 email address dianatripp@gmail.com 3. We will need 3 volunteers to pick up, put up and take down signage for the 2011 Art Show. Please call and or email Diane Wood or Diana Trip. This volunteer position will count toward your working hours commitment for the show. This annual show features some of the best artists in Boulder County. Together we can display our talent and further make the community aware of our talented artists. Thanks for contributing to the success of our show. Diane Wood

Help Kids in Haiti
|
|
Dr. Peter Schmid, our wonderful Longmont plastic surgeon, gave a program at Kiwanis club about his trip to Haiti 3 weeks after the earthquake. His photos of the co nditions were astounding, ones you would never see on TV. He is going back in May and said it would be wonderful to be able to take some paper and crayons down for the kids to have a little something to do. Actually over 2 million people live in Potr au Prince with really nothing. It would be wonderful if members could contribute some of these items for the kids. Please bring paper and crayons to the Art Guild meetings in Feb., March, and/or April. Or phone Becky Everitt for pickup-up at 303-651-0644. Coloring Books are also welcome, but small, tablet types, nothing thick and big as they are too difficult to transport and distribute. Also, no large reams of paper, just small pads or loose paper please. Crayons are very important!
Thank you in advance...
