Russ Tanner - January Demo | |
RUSS TANNER, O.P.A.
SIGNATURE MEMBER, OIL PAINTER'S OF AMERICA
BIOGRAPHY
A Room with a View
was juried a Top 100 finalist for the 2002 Art for the Parks Painting Competition and returned from touring the country for one year. The National Park Academy of the Arts to enhance public awareness of our National Parks puts on this competition.
Russ Tanner's talents drew attention at an early age. After high school, he was awarded a full scholarship to the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Upon graduation, he moved to Kansas City, where he pursued a career as an illustrator for Hallmark Cards and continued his formal studies at the Kansas City Art Institute. Later, Russ chose to freelance as an illustrator and designer for advertising firms and design studios. In 1992 Russ gave up a career as a commercial artist in the Midwest and moved permanently to New Mexico to capture the beauty of the Southwest on canvas. His work has come alive by capturing the light, color, and expansive landscapes of the New Mexico and Colorado. With fresh inspiration, his talents have matured and developed.
Russ prefers to paint in the early morning or late afternoon because it is at these times the light is more saturated while the angle of light produces brilliance of color like no other time of the day. The emergence of a new day or the slow retirement of days-end reveals a beauty of its own.
A landscape artist of the west, Russ Tanner captures light, color and expansiveness in his Plein Air and Studio paintings.

His passion for expressing mountains and vistas represent a window to this world through his eye and his brushwork. He followed his heart's passion, becoming a full time artist in 1992, with a degree from The American Academy of Art, honing his artistic skills as an illustrator for Hallmark Cards and in commercial art, advertising and design arenas.
Influenced by the art of John F Carson, Edgar Payne, and Nicholai Fechin, Russ works in a broad-brush impressionist style, grounded in his own style of painterly realism.
His attention to color and value, by painting from life, along with design, add a dimension to his paintings that have been recognized by both collector and art critics. As a Signature Member of Oil Painters of America, he exhibits in national and regional shows. His work can be seen in major national and international corporate and private collections.
The recipient of a Merit Award from the 1997 Oil Painters of America National Show and voted a signature member of OPA, Russ has exhibited in numerous national and regional competitions, Tanner juried into the 2005 Colorado Governor's Show.

LAG Holiday Party - Dec. 8th, 2010
Fun was had by all! We exchanged tree ornaments, some were homemade and some store-bought; all beautiful! We ate! We exchanged Art Cards, very colorful, creative and unique. And we enjoyed all the great food...yes, we ate, a lot! LAG gives BIG THANKS to the Great Frame Up for allowing us to have this fun get-together at their wonderful facility and to Janis Buck for her festive decorations.

Holiday Gift Fair - Dec. 10th, 2010
Some of our LAG members (including myself) offered arts and crafts for sale at this Longmont Merchants event on Dec. 10, 2010. It was held at the Old Town Marketplace on Main St. And even though the customers were few, we had lots of fun seeing all the creative items for sale, visiting Santa (I think he was having a jolly good time too) and meeting other artists.

Great news!
The guild has purchased liability insurance in order to have more opportunities to show our art work in venues that require insurance coverage. We have not had our own insurance because we used BAA, St Stephen's and The Great Frame Up insurance.
This insurance does not cover the theft of the art work. The artist needs to have their own policy for this coverage. The company that the guild is using for the liability insurance also offers a policy for the artist to protect against theft. The name of the insurance company is Johnson Archuleta Insurance and they are brokers that contact different companies and get the lowest price. The cost of the insurance for the artists depend on how much coverage they need for their art.

History of LAG... | | The Longmont Artists' Guild was formed in 1957. At the time the group consisted of six members, Maurene Buethe, Vuna Cederberg, Nellie Cozens, Geraldine Everly, Carrie Nelson and Edna Peak. In the beginning the group met at each others' homes for the purpose of sharing experiences, painting together and analyzing each others' work. The following year (1958) an article ran in The Times-Call inviting new members to join.
In 1959 the meetings were moved to the Callahan House. There were no dues at that time, however, each member paid fifty cents per year, which was used to pay the cost of renting the meeting room at Callahan House (rental was twenty-five cents per meeting).
The group was named by Carrie Nelson and some members thought the name was rather formal for such a small gathering, but over the years the "Guild" grew into it's name. The first "art show" was held at the Tea & Coffee Store in November of 1959 (which later became part of the 1st National Bank).
LAG now has over 130 members from Longmont and surrounding communities. We have no paid staff and all of our events and shows are organized by volunteers.
All voluntary talent is welcome. We make our own food for openings, manage our newsletter and promotional pieces, handle our own advertising, hang our own art for shows, and worry about details together.
Each member who participates in an art show, volunteers to spend a couple of hours answering visitor questions and managing sales. Newcomers are generally paired with more experienced members.

Dear LAG Members & Friends:
As your new LAG Newsletter Editor, I just want to say "Yikes!! What was I thinking!" I am new at this so I beg for your mercy and forgiveness, in advance, and ask that you be kind with your comments, suggestions and criticisms. However, I seriously do want to hear from you and am open to any advice or ideas that you may have. And an assistant editor would be great too...someone with some writing skills. Anybody??
Instead of bi-monthly newsletters that we have done in the past, I will (attempt to) send them monthly. To do this, I need your help. Please send me any articles, news, announcements, photos, etc. that you would like to share with our members. E-mail them to me no later than the 20th of the month BEFORE each month's issue.
Send to: susan@longmontartistsguild.org
Let's make 2011 a year of amazing art, meeting new friends and health & happiness for all.
Sincerely, Susan Steven
Longmont Artists' Guild Newsletter Editor
