Dear OLLI members,
We are excited to have recordings of the lectures in the College for Seniors Appalachian Authors series, Marc Freedman's recent lecture on "encore opportunities," and other videos now available on our website. Click on this link to go to see the new video, presentation, and press release page. We also want to remind you in this newsletter on all the varied ways we work to stay in touch with our members, including our online calendar, OLLITalk and the website (see the block in this newsletter for more information). Remember if you would like to include something in the newsletter or have any suggestions or concerns, please feel free to contact us by replying to this newsletter.
We have worked hard to create connections to many area groups that provide programming and invite you to attend one of the TRIAD lecture series taking place at the Reuter Center on Mondays at 2:30 pm through November 12. This series is sponsored by the Land-of-Sky Area Agency on Aging and focuses on the ways that local law enforcement can work with community members to provide improved services to older adults. We are pleased that it is being held here at the Center, where our members can easily benefit from the information presented.
Thank you for the many ways you work with us to provide opportunities to thrive, to stay in touch, and to keep learning in "life's second half,"
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

BOOK
DRIVE!
|
|
Would you like to see that an Asheville preschooler has a first book to take home? One of the small group projects by Leadership Asheville Seniors wants to do just that for approximately 150 preschoolers in Asheville.
Most of these children have not only never had their own personal book, but have never even had someone read a story to them. We would like to see that they have the opportunity to experience what most of us take for granted.
If you can contribute a book, or more, to this worthy cause, please place your book in the box in the Reuter Center lobby during the month of October. We will deliver the books to Asheville Preschool and see that each child has a book to take home.

The intergenerational activities that will be practiced in the garden are intended to make connections between the diverse communities and neighborhoods of Asheville, educational institutions, and forprofit sectors of the food system.

There will be a walk at 9 am on Saturday, October 13, 2012, in Clemmons, NC, near Winston Salem. It is run by the Hearing Loss Association of America. The goal is to increase awareness of causes and consequences of hearing loss, and funds raised are used for programs and services at both the national and local level. Chapters perform differing projects with this money, including aid to people needing hearing aids but unable to afford them, scholarships for various hearing purposes, or enabling a chapter to offer listening assistance at meetings.
You can benefit our very new regional chapter, which is based in Brevard: go to www.walk4hearing.org, click on Find a Walk, then Fall Walks, then Donate, then Find a Team (ours is Hear in the Mountains). If you want to donate, it can be to any of the listed team members. Ann Karson from among our OLLI membership will be walking and is listed. Her own email address, if you have questions, is [email protected]. Of course, if you are able to join in the 5K walk, that would be better yet! Registration is online in advance or from 8 am on site on the day of the walk.
