Dear NCCCR members, Next week will be a busy one here at the Center. As always, we have a full schedule of courses and lectures, but next week will bring some interesting events. On Tuesday, April 10, 4:30 pm in the Manheimer Room, we invite you to attend our Annual Town Hall meeting. We will introduce our slate of officers for 2012-13, review our Annual Member Survey and the Center's finances, discuss the final draft of the Center's Strategic Plan, and talk about our pending endowment from the Osher Foundation. We will end the meeting with a question and answer session and encourage everyone to participate. Also on Thursday, April 12, from 12:30 to 1:30, in the Private Dining Room of University Hall (the main campus dining hall, right next to Highsmith Union on University Heights) you will have the opportunity to hear Dr. Sandra Brown, College for Seniors co-chair, deliver her essay in the "This I Believe" series. Finally, next week, on Friday through Sunday, April 13 through 15, we will hold our Paths to Creative Retirement Workshop. This program brings people in from around the country to begin to plan for a fulfilling retirement. Please note that all other Center activities are canceled on that day. We want to remind anyone contemplating submitting a course proposal for College for Seniors that the deadline is April 15. You can find a course proposal form by clicking here. If you have any questions, please contact Susan Poole at spoole@unca.edu. As you take advantage of the many activities and courses available through the NC Center for Creative Retirement, take time to enjoy the beautiful spring weather and the many joys of a creative retirement. STEM LectureApril 9, 2012 4:30 pm Reuter Center, Rm 206
Pythagorean Triples by G. Marvin Eargle, PhD This "light-hearted" lecture will discuss Pythagorean Triples from a different perspective than that normally presented in textbooks. It will bring some geometric insight into the picture with some odd and generally not known properties, such as minimal triples and isosceles triples. Viewing any subject from a different perspective provides us with the opportunity to review our own disciplines by looking at other, not so obvious, approaches to finding new solutions and new paths to follow.
Free and open to the public

"Turkish Foreign Policy under the Justice and Development Party: 2002 to 2012."
Dr. Robert Olson,
Professor, Middle East History/Politics
History Department, University of Kentucky
Tuesday, April 17, 2012 , 7:30 PM
Owen Conference Center
Third Floor of Owen Hall

Virtually every discussion about the Middle Eastern and North African politics raises questions about the strength, role and influence of modern Turkey. Whether one is examining the on-going shifts of "The Arab Spring," assessing regional military security, wondering about "democratization," and even considering NATO and its future, Turkey remains central to the conversation. Dr. Olson is a seasoned observer of the country, having published numerous books and essays on it and its peoples. He has recently completed a sabbatical there and will share his insights and concerns about contemporary Turkish Foreign policy.
Mark your calendars. These programs complete our 2011-2012 series, and are free to subscribing members of the World Affairs Council of Western North Carolina, joint NCCCR - WAC-WNC members, and full time UNC Asheville students. Admission is $8.00 for all others. For further information contact George Peery, 828.242.6380, gpeery@mhc.edu
