Dear NCCCR members,

We look forward to the beginning of a new term tomorrow and anticipate the wonderful energy that arises when we have everyone involved in many activities at the Center.  There are still many interesting open courses; please remember that you may add as many courses as you can schedule at no additional fee (other than the $20 fee you may have to pay for some Wellness and Recreation courses).  The open and closed course list changes hourly for the first couple of weeks of the term, but please feel free to stop by the office on the upper level of the Reuter Center to add courses.

It is very important to be sure to drop courses officially if for some reason you will not attend.  There are often people waiting to pick up open seats, and it is important to make sure that instructors have an accurate roster of who is registered for the course.

We are in the process of putting together our strategic plan which will be put before the Center Steering Council for final approval at our April meeting.  We invite you to review the proposed Core Values by clicking here or the proposed Strategic Initiatives by clicking here. These documents are the result of compiling years of Annual Member Survey Results, Listening Sessions held here at the Center and with many campus stakeholders to identify key issues and prioritize specific projects to improve our efforts to achieve the Center's mission to provide opportunities to thrive in life's second half through learning, leadership, service, and research. Please take the time to review them and let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  We also invite you to attend the Annual Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, April 10 from 4:30 to 6 pm.  We will review the major work we have accomplished this year, review the state of the Center's budget, talk about the Strategic Plan, and answer questions about the Osher grants and endowment.

Thank you very much for your ongoing commitment to our programs and our community.  We look forward to seeing you at the Center in the coming weeks.

It's not the same Library that we used-to know!

The World of Information at Your Fingertips,

Just Down the Hill at the UNCA Ramsey Library

By John Hammond

Do you need to get some more information on a discussion topic for one of your classes or a discussion group?

Do you have a consulting engagement or some other part-time assignment and find that you could use some up-to-date resources and materials?

If so, the Ramsey Library is definitely a place that you should visit. By enabling access to nearly seventy thousand electronic journals, thirty thousand electronic books, ten thousand streaming videos and one hundred and fifty searchable databases, there is not a topic that you can imagine that is not readily available online at your fingertips. And, if this type of real-time access is not your cup of tea, the library has holdings of 268,509 books, 514 print journals and 11,757 DVDs and videos which are available for loan (borrowing terms vary depending upon class of resource).

Part of the "ABC"--Asheville, Boone, Cullowhee Network--the UNC Asheville Library provides patrons with access, including borrowing privileges, from all three of these institutions, thereby vastly increasing the range of resources available to the UNC Asheville community, including North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement members.

Your UNC Asheville OneCard (picture ID available at Highsmith Union) serves as your key to the library and all of its resources. To obtain online access, including home-based access, to the Catalog and listing of its holdings you only need to register at the Library to set-up your user name and password and "get connected."

According to Leith Tate, Access Services Librarian at the UNC Asheville Ramsey Library, "fewer than 10% of NCCCR members currently make use of the library and the staff of the facility is extremely interested in increasing the usage of the library and its resources on the part of NCCCR members." You can peruse the resources and services that are available at the Ramsey Library by clicking here to access the library website. In addition to offering borrowing privileges for books, journals, magazines, CDs and DVDs, the library maintains a vast collection of local history resources, consisting of written materials, photographs and oral histories and even a Writing Center which can provide assistance with your next authorship undertaking.

Please visit the Ramsey Library at www.unca.edu/library or, better yet, stop in for a visit. You will find that the facility is very impressive and accessible and that the Staff is extremely friendly and anxious to serve you. So "Come-on down"!
