Upcoming Schedule of Events

Dear NCCCR members, First, many thanks to all of the volunteers who made Thursday's registration a success. NCCCR's business manager Ann Cadle does an excellent job organizing the process (with help from NCCCR's facilities manager and communications coordinator Leanna Preston) and training all of us. Ann puts in long hours processing payments and coordinating data entry and verification in preparation to mail out schedules. Our lines moved quickly, and many people enjoyed connecting with friends and anticipating all the great learning that will happen during the Spring term. Today's announcements include information about the ways that Center partnerships and Center programming committees combine to provide many learning opportunities outside the rich offerings made through the College for Seniors and NCCCR Workshops. Music lovers benefit from our partnerships with the Asheville Chamber Music Series, the Blue Ridge Orchestra, and the Asheville Symphony. They also enjoy making and listening to music through the Reuter Center Singers. Those interested in history, current affairs, and politics can hear lectures presented by the Western North Carolina Historical Association, the World Affairs Council, and Leadership Asheville Forum. We have a number of community partners who offer information for those interested in the hard sciences, including the Astronomy Club of Asheville and the Elisha Mitchell Audubon Society. Center members have also organized a number of STEM (science, techology, engineering and mathematics lectures) lectures presented and attended by Center members, UNC Asheville faculty, and of course our Fabulous Fridays offer programming organized by the Health Education Series committee to inform us in practical and objective ways about health issues. Those interested in arts and culture enjoy readings from the Autumn Players, part of Asheville Community Theatre, and learn more about the art and science of photography through the f/32 photography group. The Celebrating Life in the Mountains committee organizes lectures about the life and culture of Western North Carolina, and our Lunch and Learn committee organizes lectures on a wide variety of topics to fill out our Fabulous Fridays lecture series. We hope that you will all take advantage of opportunities to learn more about things that have always interested you and also to take an hour to learn about something that you never thought about before. Many thanks to the many volunteers who bring rich, stimulating programs to the Center and enrich the possibilities for all of us. Have a great week. Any time you have ideas about new possibilities for lifelong learning opportunities or ways to promote creative retirement, please let me know. Catherine Frank Executive Director |

Celebrating Life in the Mountains

Living in Asheville is not a spectator sport -- you have to experience it.
By John Yenne

The title says it all - that is the reason Celebrating Life in the Mountains was established as an NCCCR program four years ago.
These presentations discuss the opportunities, events, natural resources and activities in and around Asheville that can help retirees enjoy life in the mountains more fully. The presentations are held four times a year at the Reuter Center, are free to attend and are open to the public.
For instance, the program is currently focusing on geographical points of interest. "Points West" was a presentation in the Fall 2011 that highlighted the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A park ranger and a tourism official from Haywood County were featured in the program. On April 17, 2012, "Points North" will feature speakers from the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation to talk about those two enchanting mountain resources.
But the presentations aren't always about leaving home to celebrate mountain living. "Native Born" was a recent presentation about inspired gardening in the mountains. Indigenous plants, erosion control and manageable maintenance for homeowners were discussed. All sessions are held in the evenings at 7 p.m.
Celebrating Life in the Mountains got its start as a grass-roots program under the Center's Membership Committee, with the goal of attracting new people to the Center. "We thought it would interest members to have programs about living in the greater Asheville area with all of the wonderful things to do and our beautiful surroundings to enjoy," said Nelson Sobel, one of the founders of the program. "These are some of many things that brought most of us here in retirement."
Up to 120 people now attend each presentation, but the founders weren't always confident in its success. Sobel recalled the trepidation surrounding the first program in 2008 that featured panelists from area theaters. "There was nervous chatter wondering if anyone would come. As we approached the 7 pm start time, people started to filter in. As the first couple of people took their seats we all gave a sigh of relief and had big smiles knowing someone showed up."
Sobel credits the program's success to the Center's encouraging, member-participating environment.
