And Beyond...
Dear NCCCR members,

We had a successful celebration of our members and volunteers on Tuesday, February 14.  Many thanks to Jeanne Smolkin and her committee for putting together a wonderful party, with nourishing food, cheering wine and punch, energizing music, and most important, convivial company. When we gather and celebrate as a community, we affirm our connections and shared commitment to thriving in life's second half. More important, we have fun!

We marked the entire week as a celebration of volunteers, as hundreds of you put hearts on our bulletin board to name individuals who give their time and talent to the Center and hundreds of organizations in Western North Carolina. By contributing so much to our community of seasoned adults and so much to the larger community of our area, each of you demonstrates the importance of crafting and living a creative retirement.

And coming up next week, we will gather on Thursday, February 23, beginning around 8 am, to register for our Spring 2012 term of the College for Seniors.  You can find out more about the logistics of registration by following this link to the Center's home page. We will send out a separate email in the next couple of days with this information.  In the spirit of our community, we hope you will reach out to those who might have trouble standing in line or arriving early in the morning or who might be out of town.  We are making some progress in assessing our options for online registration, but those kinds of changes are probably a couple of terms away at this point.  For now, we appreciate your patience and the work of staff and volunteers who work to make the process as smooth as possible.

TODAY

The UNCA Big Band will proudly share the stage with world-champion digital accordionist Cory Pesaturo on Sunday, Feb 19th at 4:00 pm, in UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium.

Pesaturo's talent has been feted by Bill Clinton and Wynton Marsalis, among others.

He has been described by the likes of the Boston Globe as "not just a monster [of a player], but a monster's monster," a "musical boy wonder" whose mastery of the Roland electric accordion may make the instrument "hip" again.

Today's program will showcase Pesaturo's versatility and the versatility of the UNCA Big Band and push the frontiers of jazz!

Tickets $5 at the door.

FREE CONCERT
Music

The Reuter Center Singers, with more than 50 participants, will be performing at the St. Matthias Episcopal Church, Asheville's oldest historically African-American congregation, on Sunday, February 26th, 3pm.  During the winter months, concerts are held each Sunday at the church, featuring a wide variety of local talent.  In honor of Black History Month, the pieces to be performed are all by black composers:  "Come Sunday" by Duke Ellington, selections from the opera " Treemonisha" by Scott Joplin, and selections from Robert Ray's "Gospel Mass."

This concert will also feature a guest performer, baritone Roberto Flores.  Roberto has recently made Asheville his home and has years of musical experience, performing musical theatre, oratorio and pera throughout the South East and Europe.  Roberto has been a soloist with the Asheville Symphony, performs regularly with the Asheville Lyric Opera, with the acappella ensemble Pastyme and with the Chancel Choir of Trinity Episcopal Church in downtown Asheville.

                Financial Strategies in Retirement
A new Special Interest Group, Financial Strategies in Retirement, will meet at the Reuter Center on Friday, Feb. 24 at 10 am in Room 206.  This group is intended for people who already have a basic knowledge of investment strategies and wish to help research and  evaluate the ideas arising from its members and guests. We will not be investing any money as a group, but hope to inform members of opportunities that may interest them.

Monthly meetings will be scheduled.
Come to our meeting with your ideas and/ or email Kate Beatty for further information at kkbmom@yahool.com
