Dear NCCCR members,

Organizations like the NC Center for Creative Retirement have been structured as organizations created by members for members.  They also exist on university campuses, not in a social service environment familiar in the conventional senior center model, to emphasize the importance of having older adults in the intellectual mainstream, enjoying and contributing to the exchange of ideas in an academic environment.

Clearly the needs, structure, and programs of organizations like ours differ from many activities on a campus where the focus is the education of 18-21 year olds. For that reason, we appreciate the ways that our members are creating opportunities for exchanging ideas and knowledge with the larger university community . This week, the STEM lecture on the science and technology of oil and gas production (see the full description below) by Bob Davis is a perfect example of one of our members sharing technical and intellectual expertise with an audience that will include NCCCR members along with UNC Asheville faculty, staff, and students.  Many thanks to Bob for preparing this lecture and to Howard Jaslow for his consistent efforts to make possible these intergenerational opportunities.

In the spirit of contributing to the campus community, we hope that you will take a moment to respond to a university-wide survey about signs and "wayfinding" on campus (see the link below).  Since the Reuter Center draws so many people from the community to lectures and other programs, campus administrators value NCCCR members' opinions and hope that you can help them by providing your input to improve the ways people navigate the campus.

We also encourage you to use Ramsey library and have some information below about ways to make sure that you have a good experience when you use your OneCard to check out materials.

Sometimes being on a university campus presents challenges for our members, but participation in the life of the campus also presents possibilities to broaden our reach and suggest the importance of healthy, active aging as part of a well-rounded campus.

As always, if you have questions or concerns, please let me know.

Using the
UNC Asheville Library

If you are a current member of NCCCR and have a OneCard photo ID, you may use the Ramsey Library on campus.  Some of our members using the library for the first time during a membership year may attempt to check out materials and will be told that their membership has "expired."  Please remind the library staff that your OneCard will need to be swiped through the OneCard keyboard wedge.   This is an additional step that library staff must do for our members that is sometimes forgotten by student staff at the library.  Should this not resolve your being denied library check out privileges, please contact Ann Cadle in our office at 251-6384 or acadle@unca.edu.

Announcing the formation of a new Special Interest Group (SIG):  "Financial Strategies in Retirement."  The group will hold its first organizational meeting open to all on February 3 at 1:30 pm in Room 206 at the Reuter Center.  This group is geared towards people who already have a basic knowledge of investment strategies and wish to help research and evaluate ideas from members and guests.  We will not be investing any funds as a group, but hope to inform members of opportunities that may interest them.  Monthly meetings will be scheduled. For questions, contact Kate Beatty at kkbmom@yahoo.com or call 231-7710.

 Creative Relocation Exploration Weekend (CREW):

Gearing Up for 2012

Relocation, relocation, relocation!  NCCCR hosted its annual program for those thinking of relocating in retirement last May, and the planning has begun for CREW 2012 which will take place May 25-27, 2012.

Attendees come from all over the country to the NC Center for Creative Retirement, to learn about lifestyle choices in this phase of life as they relate to choosing the right community for relocation and housing that meets their long term needs.

Couples and singles alike explore the challenges and opportunities of relocating and making their retirement as fulfilling as possible.  Apprehension and anxiety fade when attendees gain information, empowerment, and insight from NCCCR members who volunteer for the weekend, as well as from other attendees and expert presenters.

Through a series of presentations, panel discussions, and breakout sessions, participants gain insight from Center members about their relocation experiences.  In fact, about 15 Center members who attended CREW and then moved to Asheville help plan the program each year.

In 2012, the program will be updated; Friday and Saturday programming will address lifestyle issues, choosing a new hometown and housing, finding community, de-cluttering and downsizing for those considering a move anywhere in the country.  Sunday's optional program is for those who are curious about Asheville as a place to retire and will include an overview of small towns in Western North Carolina; health care, educational and cultural opportunities in Asheville, and small group tours of Asheville neighborhoods and properties.

"I thought we had a good concept of expectations in planning for our retirement," shared a 2011 attendee.  "CREW showed us so much more to think about, so we are starting over with our planning and have more confidence about making a relocation decision."

Know of someone who's considering a move in retirement?  Pass this information along to them.  If you would like to know more about CREW, please contact Michelle Rogers, Program Director, at 828.250.3871 or email mrogers@unca.edu, or visit: www.AshevilleCREW.com
