And Beyond...

Dear NCCCR members,

Those of you have gone to our website any time after Friday afternoon may have noticed a new look. If you haven't had a chance, please take a look at our new look by clicking here.  We have adopted the university's website software and most of their template, in part because the new software makes changes, corrections and additions to the site much easier.  The university's site has also inspired us to include more pictures and stories about our members that reflect and project the many exciting events and dynamic people who make us who we are. We will continue to refine the site, including the addition of stories to accompany the pictures that you will see on the "front page." Migrating the data from our existing site has been done quickly, so please let us know if you have any problems finding the content you are used to.

Also, this week will be the first monthly session of "The DIrector is In," a time when I will be in the atrium of the Reuter Center, this month on Thursday, January 19 between 11 am and 1 pm, to answer questions, hear suggestions and get to know all of you a little better.  I hope that you will stop by on Thursday.

Remember that the Center will be closed on Monday, January 16, in commemoration of the Martin Luther King holiday.  We have listed some of the many commemorations planned for the UNC Asheville campus this week and hope you may find time to attend.

Last Friday, January 13, we had a few snow flurries in Asheville and some more significant accumulation in areas to our north and at higher elevations. It's a good time to review our policy on closings and delays.  NCCCR closes when the university closes for adverse weather, and those closings are announced on the front page of the university's website (unca.edu).  You may also call the university's "snow line" at 828-259-3050. We will post on the Center's main line (828-251-6140) and on my line (828-251-6188) our decisions on closing.  If the university announces a delay, our 9 am classes will begin at 10 am but end at 11 am. Classes for the rest of the day would be on their regular schedule. If at all possible, we will send an email to our members letting them know about our decisions and reminding them of the policies.  We know that weather can vary widely across our area.  Even if we are open, please use your judgment and care in making decisions about whether or not you can drive or navigate icy sidewalks.

As always, please contact me (cfrank@unca.edu) or phone me at 828-251-6188 if you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns.

Best wishes,

Catherine Frank

 Executive Director

Asheville Chautauqua Coordinator Opening
Chatauqua is the decades-old tradition of assembling to hear, learn and be entertained by historic figures from America's past. These people, like Thomas Jefferson, John Muir or Rosa Parks, are brought to life on stage by accomplished Chatauquan performers.

The Asheville Chatauqua is run in cooperation with Greenville, SC Chatauqua organization every June. This will be the last year for the current Asheville Chatauqua coordinator, and he is looking to work with someone this 2012 season who will replace him during the 2013 season.

The scope of the duties, which are performed by a team of volunteers, are:
Arrange with a AB Tech to use Ferguson Auditorium
Coordinate with Greenville Chautauqua committee for performers and credits for the companion reader
Publicize the program
Arrange for musicians to perform from 7 to 7:30
Arrange for volunteers each night to help with tickets refreshments etc.
Arrange for lodging for presenters
Coordinate with presenters when they arrive in town
Arrange to have series passes made
Post all signs at performance site
Arrange to have stipend checks for musicians and presenters

Please help this tradition continue and contact Gil Elliot  for more information. 667-4146  gilelliot@charter.net
Raise Your Hand
Raise Your Hand

Hundreds of members volunteer their time and talents to make our Center a thriving community.  They teach courses, address facility needs, plan events and programs, lead our SIGs, develop our strategic plan, advise on our finances and research and much, much more.  Find your niche at the Center-click here to find out how you can help.

Each month we feature a volunteer opportunity at the Center and highlight the work of our members.

We currently need volunteers on our NCCCR Marketing Committee to help with publicity, communications and electronic information distribution for the Center and to identify groups who might like to learn about what NCCCR has to offer.   Experience with marketing and writing is a plus.  Contact committee chair Carol Gillen at 828-253-2282 or carol@gillen.com for more information.

We'd like to recognize the effort of the New Member Welcome Committee-Linda Bushar and Jan Guichard (co-chairs), Flo Byron, Lisette DeGroot, Babs Guardenier, Cathy Keckeley, Linda Macfarlane, Barbara Mueller, Kathy Rouse, Ceil Sanow and Barbara Weatherall.  This group of volunteers plans three New Member Welcome events each year-they coordinate calling all new members to personally welcome them to the Center and they provide a program that highlights Center offerings and governance, giving new members a chance to make new friends.  This committee has fun giving a warm welcome to our members and we are grateful for all their hard work!

Contact Michelle Rogers at 828-250-3871 or mrogers@unca.edu for more information.
