And Beyond...

Dear NCCCR members,

This is our last email message of 2011, and we want to express our hopes for a productive year for the Center in 2012.  This could also be a list of all the things we are grateful for in 2011, all of the things that have made the Center great since 1988. This is the season to look back on where we have been and to look forward to where we might go.  In that spirit, we look forward in 2012:

  • To being part of a university community that even in difficult times looks to the future and appreciates and supports the Center's goal of lifelong learning
  • To making the best use of the support of the Janirve Foundation that was instrumental in the funding of the Reuter Center and sustains us with the endowment awarded in 2010
  • To pushing ourselves to be innovative using the current grant funding and to maintain our place in the national conversation about programming for older adults through the anticipated endowment from the Osher Foundation
  • To creating a sense of fulfillment and recognition of the hours given by the members of our Center Steering Council to direct and implement our programming
  • To expressing our appreciation for our inspiring College for Seniors and Workshops instructors who share their passion
  • To offering opportunities for the intellectually curious College for Seniors and Workshops participants who often teach as much as they learn and for the Class Reps who support all of our efforts
  • To finding more outlets for the civic-minded thinkers who organize Leadership Asheville Seniors programs that introduce participants to the opportunities to make a difference in our community
  • To strengthening the efforts of the volunteer facilitators for Paths to Creative Retirement and Creative Retirement Exploration Weekend as they demonstrate the many possibilities for change and fulfillment in life's second half
  • To supporting the leaders who organize our Special Interest Groups and the many SIG members who enliven the Center with the fellowship and joy of their shared activities.
  • To collaborating with a wonderful staff, Ann Cadle, Anne Mock, Susan Poole, Leanna Preston, and Michelle Rogers, who always go above and beyond the call of duty
  • To nurturing a sense of community that distinguishes us from other learning opportunities in our area and the assets that set us apart from other lifelong learning programs

I wish you the joys of the season and the happiest and healthiest of new years.

Catherine Frank

 Executive Director

What Does the Center Steering Council do?

By Dick Murray, Chair

You start with the chairs of eleven committees, add the Executive Director, have the membership elect three officers, involve the Chair from the previous year, invite the CFS Director, have the Chancellor appoint a Campus Rep, and you've got the Center Steering Council (CSC).

Officially, the CSC sets the guidelines and direction for the operation of the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement (NCCCR). We do this with the approval of the Executive Director and in collaboration with the staff. Simply put, the CSC provides a forum to discuss and advise on the important issues and decisions affecting the Center. While the CSC approves projects, the real work is done by the committees and staff.

Here are examples of some special accomplishments of our committees in the last 12 months:

- College for Seniors: 191 volunteer teachers conducted 294 classes, filling over 2000 seats.

- Facilities: Supervised installation of two "smart" podiums, and is in the process of ordering two more.

- Finance: Began evaluating the Center's ability to adapt to potential revenue changes related to the economy.

- Health & Wellness: Conducted Healthy Living Day for the second year.

- Life Transitions: Updated the Paths and CREW programs.

- Marketing: Made 17 presentations to community organizations outlining the benefits of membership in NCCCR.

- Membership: Planned and conducted nine events serving over 1000 members and guests.

- Planning: Researched and developed a new strategic planning process.

- Research: Conducted 21 research studies, including the Annual Member Survey.

As we look ahead, there are a number of opportunities beckoning. We have become a member of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes and will be planning and communicating the many ways this change will enhance the work of the Center. The Center's relationship with UNC Asheville offers the chance for many cooperative ventures. We will be reactivating our Civic Engagement Committee to improve our presence in the community. Our first priority, however, is to ensure we continue to provide our members with the programs and services they have come to expect.

Our current and future successes rely one important fact. Everything that is accomplished is due to the talents and dedication of our volunteers and staff. Over 400 of our members regularly volunteer to help the Center provide the programs that serve our 1600+ members. Their efforts have enabled NCCCR to be recognized nationally as a leader in our field. We are proud of this reputation, but our real satisfaction comes from hearing that we are meeting our members' expectations.

If you have questions or suggestions, feel free to talk to any member of the CSC. We're the folks with the blue name tags, and we would be happy to chat with you about what we do, and how you can participate.
