Dear NCCCR members,

Because the Reuter Center is a home away from home for many of us, we can sometimes take for granted all the amazing things that go on here.  Just this week you might have seen Paula Withrow dressed as Nefertiti to bring Egyptian history to life or you might have heard the sound of many hammered dulcimers being played in Janet Parkerson's course.  You might have heard Daniel Meyer, the conductor of our local symphony, give a "behind the scenes" talk to a standing room only crowd about an upcoming performance. You might have made a special trip in to hear a Fab Friday talk which included Nobel Laureate / 2000 Appalachian Trail Hiker / College for Seniors instructor Lenny Bernstein introducing a panel from the Blue Ridge Sustainability Institute.  You might have heard the laughter of friends playing mah jongg or bridge or seen a group of volunteers celebrating another successfully completed project.  You may have encountered special interest groups of skeptical inquirers or spiritual inquirers. You might have taken the time to learn more about advance directives or been part of a group planning our upcoming Creative Retirement Exploration Weekend. You many simply have enjoyed the warmth of the afternoon sun or the blaze of color on view through the windows of the Reuter Center atrium.

You can experience amazing things at the NC Center for Creative Retirement every week thanks to the work of friends, volunteers, and staff who collaborate and plan for the common good of the Center. I hope that we all take time to savor the experience of being part of an organization that is a model for programs across the country and remember that we always welcome your comments and ideas to make it even better. Thanks so much for all that you do.

Theatre UNCA Offers "Our Town"
OurTown
The Drama Department's first mainstage production of the year, Thornton Wilder's classic Our Town, opens next Friday, Oct 21st,  in Carol Belk Theatre. Our Town, which describes life in the mythical town of Grovers Corner at the beginning of the 20th century, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1938. Through the heartwarming story of life in a small community, Wilder addresses issues of daily life, love and marriage, and death and eternity. The play is directed by Assistant Professor of Drama Lise Kloeppel, and is designed by Associate Professors Rob Bowen and Robert Berls and staff member Ida Bostian.

There are a few changes from last year: first, we will be running for TWO weekends (Friday - Sunday [21-23], and then Thursday through Saturday [27-29]); second, we will be starting the evening productions at 7:30pm. In addition, we are pleased to announce that advance tickets may be purchased for cash at the Highsmith Union Information Desk from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. You can also reserve tickets over the phone at 232-2291, or go on-line at
http://www.unca.edu/drama. Tickets are $10 for general public, $8 for faculty, NCCCR members and senior citizens, and $5 for students. As we have in past years, UNC A staff receive one complimentary ticket as a thanks for their contributions to the university.

We hope you will see the show!
Looking for Volunteers!

The first annual Gala Gymnastics Competition is a wonderful opportunity for volunteer involvement.  The Gala will be an exciting competition involving talented athletes from ages 6-18.  The event will be held on New Years weekend (December 30, 2011 - January 1, 2012) on the UNC-Asheville campus at the beautiful new Kimmel Arena.  There will be a variety of options for volunteers including collecting door fees, selling programs, hospitality for coaches and judges, judges' assistants, event timers, and organizing awards.  No knowledge of gymnastics is necessary and training requirements will be minimal.

If you've never attended a gymnastics event, this is your opportunity to interact with some top level gymnasts, judges and coaches in a fun and healthy environment.  Come join us by signing up on our website at www.thegala.net.
