NCCCR Calendar & Announcements
Upcoming Schedule of Events
October 9-15, 2011 |

Dear NCCCR members,
Please be aware that although classes remain in full swing at NCCCR, the university will be on Fall Break on Monday and Tuesday, October 10 and 11. Unfortunately, the Reuter Cafe will be closed on those days, so please plan accordingly.
Many thanks to Nelson Sobel for making all the connections and writing about the collaboration between UNC Asheville's landscape and facilities staff and the Men's Garden Club of Asheville to create new plantings on the lower level of the Reuter Center (please see the article below). Melissa Acker, the landscape director for UNC Asheville, was our primary contact and worked with the Men's Garden Club to find appropriate native plants that complement the rest of the university's landscape. She also came up with the idea to have goats clear the growth on the hillside above the Center. The goats have finished their work, did an excellent job, and were a great topic of conversation. The whole project was a great example of the way that staff and volunteers consistently generate good ideas and work together at the Center to get things done.
Thanks so much to all of our members who volunteer and participate in the effort to craft a creative retirement. Please know that my door is always open if you have questions, concerns, or ideas about the operations and plans of the Center.
Catherine Frank
Executive Director

"Bright Ideas" Program Needs Volunteers!
A new afterschool program at Isaac Dickson Elementary School seeks volunteers who hope to make a difference in a child's life. There are opportunities for one-on-one tutoring and small group activity leaders. Volunteers might teach a club for an hour a week for 8 weeks or supervise outdoor playtime. The program is designed to close the achievement gap in lower socio-economic children by providing activities and homework help to boost self esteem and academic achievement. The program operates from 2:30 - 5:30 pm Monday through Friday and volunteer opportunities are available at any of those times. Please contact Tracey Whitehouse at trace.whitehouse@gmail.com or 230-0596 to learn more. |

Sprucing Up Landscaping at the Reuter Center
| | |
The UNC Asheville Landscaping Department, the NC Center for Creative Retirement, and the Men's Garden Club of Asheville recently came together to enhance the appearance of the landscape on the lower level of the Reuter Center. Earlier in the year the Garden Club approached Catherine Frank and Leanna Preston to determine whether there was interest for the Club to work with the Center to upgrade some of the Center's landscaping as one of its "beautification sites".
There was agreement to proceed, and the Club worked with Melissa Acker, UNC Asheville's Landscape Director, to come up with a plan to spruce up the area at the southwest corner of the Center. The plan was to use plants that would enhance the existing landscape by adding three Nellie Stevens holly trees on the slope in front of the mechanical equipment, seven Mount Airy fothergilla by the Leah Karpen Terrace and the nearby sidewalk, and a stepping stone pathway through the bed. The hollies will grow to screen the mechanical equipment, and the fothergilla will add spring flowers, fall color and general winter interest to the area.
The Center paid for the plants and stone, and on a late September morning six Club members along with Melissa Acker trimmed existing plants, planted the shrubs and trees, and spread mulch. The UNC Asheville Landscape Department added more mulch to complete the work. One of the participants, Carl Peterson, Club President and Center member, noted that "The Men's Garden Club of Asheville is proud to be a part of the beautification project of an area surrounding the Reuter Center at UNC Asheville.
The Men's Garden Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to beautification projects within Asheville. They support and maintain a greenhouse producing annual and perennial plants for sale to raise money for horticultural scholarships at Blue Ridge Community College and Haywood Community College. Membership is open to men who are interested in any and all aspects of horticulture. The Garden Club, along with Center volunteers and staff will look after the new plants and generally help UNC Asheville maintain this garden bed.
If you enjoy gardening or would like to try gardening, the Center is forming a group to help the UNC Asheville Landscape Department maintain the plant beds around the Center. Please contact Michelle Rogers in the Center office if you would like to participate in this activity.
