Dear NCCCR members,

We had a great New Member Welcome on Friday, September 16. Many thanks to Flo Byron and the members of the Calling Committee for making warm, personal invitations to new members. Thanks to Linda Bushar and Jan Guichard and members of the New Member Welcome Committee for organizing the event and putting on a lovely spread of food. Thanks to Babs Guardenier and Kathy Rouse for bringing their warmth and humor to the event, to Michelle Rogers for organizing the "New Member Mixer," to all of our table hosts and SIG chairs and to Leanna Preston for setting things up.

We are excited that College for Seniors classes will begin again on Monday, September 19. Please take a moment to read through the following reminders to make the start of classes easier for everyone.

We post the lists of room assignments for classes and other events outside the office on the upper level. From September 19-21st, we will also have Membership Committee members with "Ask Me" signs to point you in the right direction and to answer any other questions you might have and members of various College for Seniors committees also available to answer questions. Please note that new members will be wearing owl stickers on their nametags. We hope that our seasoned participants will take the time to welcome new members and answer questions.

We expect parking, especially Mondays through Wednesdays, to continue to be tight at the Reuter Center. If you would like to avoid the parking hassle, you may use the shuttle from Parking Lot A. You can find a map and more information about other campus shuttles by clicking here. You are allowed to park in any white-lined space on campus if you have a current parking decal posted on the rear window on the driver's side. You should also know that undergraduate students are also allowed to park in white-lined spaces, even those at the Reuter Center. Please know that we support our colleagues in the campus police and cannot assist you if you get a ticket when you choose to park illegally.

Please remember that there may be people who want your seat in CFS courses, so if you cannot or choose not to attend a course, please see Ann Cadle in the Reuter Center office in order to drop courses officially so that we can invite people from the waiting list. Also remember that you must be enrolled in classes in order to attend, even if you see an empty seat.

Finally, please try to be patient as we continue to work with a reduced staff.  We appreciate the wonderful people who are volunteering for shifts at the front desk; we ask all of our experienced members to look out for people who may need a friendly face as they learn the Center's routines.

Thanks so much to all of our members who volunteer and participate in the effort to craft a creative retirement.

Redistricting: Who Wins?  Leadership Asheville Forum Luncheon

It's a hot-button local issue with important national implications.  The newly-revised map for NC's 11th Congressional District drastically alters the playing field for next year's general election.  Democrats complain that the map drawn by Republicans is gerrymandered.  Republicans counter that they're only doing what Democrats have done for the past 100 years.  At Leadership Asheville Forum's September luncheon, UNC Asheville political science professor William Sabo will sort out the arguments and tell us who wins and who loses. Dr. Sabo holds a PhD in political science from UNC Chapel Hill and is a frequent speaker and media expert on political issues.
