How to make your carpets last!
1. Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum!
It is very important to detail along the base mouldings, or a black line may develop over time. This is called filtration soil and is difficult to remove. Filtration soil will develop rapidly in rooms that get skipped because "nobody ever uses" These black lines are caused by air circulating through the carpet using it as a filter.
2. Keep computers and electronics off the Carpet
Electronics often circulate air through them with a fan. It is a good idea to keep these up on a desk or shelf to avoid damage to the carpet.
3. Moving furniture
This one can be a challenge due to limited space and obstacles, but rearranging furniture can help minimize permanent traffic wear.

Missing grout or caulk is sure to cause problems
Missing or damaged grout & caulk in a shower or around a tub will lead to problems. It is important to inspect your tubs and showers for these small problems before they turn into big problems. Look carefully for obvious signs, such as water marks in the corners outside the shower. Water will travel along the lip of the shower pan or tub, behind the tile and the shower door where you cannot see it, causing bathroom floor damage. Many folks think this is caused by their children not putting a towel down, that is unlikely.
Many times people will see a water stain develop on the ceiling in the room below the bathroom and call a plumber. Nine times out of ten the plumber will come out, cut holes in the drywall to inspect the plumbing and say "there is nothing wrong with the plumbing, it has to be the grout or caulk". Now, there is a leaky shower, plumbers fee and a drywall repair.
Have you ever tried a product that claims to remove black mildew stains but doesn't? If your caulk has turned black and you can't get it clean that is because moisture has been trapped behind it, you can scrub all day long, but it will not help, it needs to be replaced.
Another sure sign of moister where it should not be is ants, If you have the tiny black ants in your bathroom, chances are they are enjoying your nice slow shower leak.
Many of these issues can be corrected with some maintenance, however, if left alone, the damage becomes too severe and costly replacement will be needed. Don't wait until the tiles or soap dish fall off the wall, maintenance is key! |

Door mats will prolong the life of your floors! |
No matter what type of flooring you have, they are under constant assault from soil brought in from outside. Hardwoods get scratched, soil rubs against carpet fibers leading to traffic patterns. Quality mats at all the entrances to the home or office will greatly extend the life of your floors.
I use these mats at my own home, yes they are a little commercial looking, but they catch an incredible amount of soil, before it comes inside!!! and, after 10 years these mats still look brand new. | |
