Taking A Break

July, 2011
Quote of the month:

"There are two ways to live: you can live as if nothing is a miracle; you can live as if everything is a miracle."

 by: Albert Einstein

My Philosophy

My therapeutic philosophy is a combination of believing that discussions of the past can help you to understand where you have come from, which allows you to be able to define where you are today, which further aids in the creating of goals needed to help you reach your full potential.

I will treat you with compassion, understanding and respect, knowing that asking for help is not an easy thing to do.

 YOU ARE WORTH THE EFFORT!!

Life is not always easy.  It doesn't come with a manual.  But it usually does come with an instinct to seek help when it is needed.

I welcome the opportunity to help you work through current issues and to look at your future with a sense of hope and purpose.

Greetings!

Hope the summer is going well and you are able to enjoy some added leisure time. Maybe it's taking the kids to the pool, or visiting relatives or looking forward to that annual block party or neighborhood barbecue that gets you to relax.  It is so important to take time to let our mind and body take a break periodically to allow us to rejuvenate and refocus.

When you go back to the job or the daily routine with the kids you have given yourself the opportunity, even for a short amount of time, to look at things from a different perspective. That different perspective could lead to solving an old problem with a new idea inspired by new surroundings. Think about it.  Enjoy the article below and I look forward to hearing from you.

From The Positive Perspective.......

Whether a business owner, stay-at-home parent, employee or volunteer of the year, it's important to remind yourself to take a break once in a while.  We all work so hard to make use of every minute of every day to its fullest potential.  Use that same ethic to focus on relaxing a little.

I applaud the work ethic of some companies to offer golf outings or a barbecue offsite to allow business employees to connect in a different atmosphere.  That change in venue can help foster new ideas due to different environmental influences.  Of course as a marriage therapist, I support these activities with the understanding that appropriate behavior is maintained at all times.

I encourage the stay-at-home parent who has no other environment to "go to", to be able to set a boundary at home with your children that Mom or Dad needs this 30 minutes to relax or read or get some fresh air without interruption.  Just being able to focus on yourself and your thoughts for a moment can be a new and exciting feeling.

Younger children tend to like the old standard kitchen timer.  Have them go play in their room alone or in another safe environment and come out when the timer goes off.  Set it for 10 minutes or 60 minutes....your choice. With just that small break, you might be shocked to see that playtime together will be even better.  Patience with this process is crucial, though.  Depending on the age of the child, it may take several times before they understand.  Or use your child's nap time to read the novel you keep trying to finish.  Do something small for yourself if you can.  You might be amazed at the renewed energy you feel when that time is up.

If you are a business owner, as I am, it's tough sometimes to take that break.  Taking a day off of networking can be so good for your soul.  Setting work boundaries in your home environment is important as well.  We could all work on our businesses 24/7 and still not get everything done, but remember who and what you are working so hard for.  If you don't ever take the time to enjoy your life, your spouse, significant other or family or friends, then who/what are you really working for?  I give you permission to take the time to laugh and be silly - just a little. Your business will be fully waiting for you again the following day.

So how do you want to use the rest of your summer?  Take the time away from your busy schedule to enjoy your family, your friends and your work and be in the moment with them.  It helps to look at it From the Positive Perspective........
