The President George Bush Turnpike Western Extension, also known as State Highway 161, will provide a new, approximately 11.5-mile link in the growing loop around Dallas. The corridor consists of the tolled PGBT WE main lanes and the SH 161 frontage roads. Phase 1, which includes the frontage roads from Carrier Parkway to Interstate 20, is complete and open to traffic. Phases 2 and 3 consist of the tolled main lanes between SH 183 and I-30 and are also open to traffic. The final phase of the project, Phase 4, extends from I-30 to I-20 in Grand Prairie and is expected to open to traffic in October 2012. ________________________________________________________________ |
Final phase of Western Extension opens in October
The President George Bush Turnpike Western Extension is scheduled to open to traffic by morning rush hour Monday, Oct. 15, weather permitting.
The project will open in phases; two main lanes in each direction from Egyptian Way south to Interstate 20 will be complete, along with a four-level interchange connecting I-20 to the Western Extension main lanes. Five of the eight direct-connector ramps and bridges at the I-30 interchange also will be open to traffic by Monday morning.
The following three I-30 direct connectors are scheduled to open in early 2013:
* Westbound I-30 to southbound Western Extension
* Westbound I-30 to northbound Western Extension
* Southbound Western Extension to eastbound I-30
The SH 161 frontage road at grade railroad crossings between Main Street and Jefferson Road are scheduled to open at the end of the year.

Aligned with the toll rates on the rest of the NTTA facility, TollTag customers traveling on the Western Extension will pay 15.3 cents per mile, while ZipCash customers will pay 50 percent more. The cost difference is due to the higher costs of toll collection associated with ZipCash transactions.
