The President George Bush Turnpike Western Extension, also known as State Highway 161, will provide a new, approximately 11.5-mile link in the growing loop around Dallas. The corridor consists of the tolled PGBT WE main lanes and the SH 161 frontage roads. Phase 1, which includes the frontage roads from Carrier Parkway to Interstate 20, is complete and open to traffic. Phases 2 and 3 consist of the tolled main lanes between SH 183 and I-30 and are also open to traffic. The final phase of the project, Phase 4, extends from I-30 to I-20 in Grand Prairie and is expected to open to traffic in October 2012. ________________________________________________________________ |

Construction Update

The Dalworth Street bridge near downtown Grand Prairie was recently opened to traffic in time for the start of the new school year. As a result, the southbound State Highway 161 frontage road was reopened to traffic from January Lane south to Dalworth Street. The portion of the southbound SH 161 frontage road between Dalworth Street and Main Street remains closed while crews complete the repairs to an existing storm-sewer pipe. Although the bridge is complete, the south to north U-turn lane will remain closed until October as crews continue backfilling and paving the southbound SH 161 frontage road.
Other construction activities on the north end of the project include setting bridge beams on both the northern half of Jefferson bridge and the southern half of the Main Street bridge. Crews are currently installing deck panels and reinforcing steel for both structures.
In addition, retaining wall panel installation continues north of Main Street as well as bridge deck placement on the January Lane bridge.
On the south end of the project, the main lane toll gantry structure near Arkansas Lane is complete and crews are preparing the roadway for striping south of Jefferson Street. |
