Chisholm Trail Parkway is a 27.6-mile toll road that will extend from Tarrant County to Johnson County, starting from Fort Worth's central business district at Interstate 30 and continuing to U.S. 67 in Cleburne. The NTTA began initial construction in April 2010 on Section 2C, one of the northernmost sections of the project, located in Fort Worth near Union Pacific Railroad's Davidson Yard. In March 2010, the Texas Department of Transportation began construction of Section 3A, a $117 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act project. Section 3A consists of local access improvements to Interstate 20/State Highway 183 (Southwest Boulevard) at CTP. Construction of the remaining project sections is underway. The entire CTP project is anticipated to open to traffic in spring 2014.

The Big Why

Welcome to "The Big Why," a new column developed to answer some of the more frequent or curious questions commuters ask about the Chisholm Trail Parkway. Please feel free to drop a note with your questions to ChisholmTrail@ntta.org or give us a call at (817) 916-5105.

One question that seems to pop up frequently surrounds the timing of concrete pours.

Placing concrete is a process in and of itself. Crews place steel reinforcements, construct wood forms, pour the concrete into the forms and use those forms as support for each element of the structure until the concrete sets. Depending on the location and type of the structure, some of this work can be performed away from traffic while others require lane reductions and closures. But during the times when traffic is an issue, there are other considerations involved with the timing of these pours.

Safety is the first factor influencing the timing of concrete pours. Due to the size of equipment involved in performing concrete pours and the sheer volume of traffic during the daytime, crews will look to minimize traffic impacts and maximize safety for motorists. Using the evening and early morning hours of the day when traffic volume is lower allows crews to set up lane closures that will allow the safe maneuvering of large equipment.

Temperature is the second crucial component in the concrete pouring process. The ideal temperature for pouring concrete ranges from 50-90 degrees. On hot days, too much water evaporates from newly placed concrete causing the top layer of concrete to dry much faster than the bottom layer. Because concrete shrinks as it dries, the top layer will shrink while the bottom layer remains stationary. This can cause cracking and affect the quality and life span of the concrete.

New Hulen Street bridge construction ahead of schedule

The new Hulen Street bridge is expected to open partially to traffic in September. The new bridge, which is immediately east of the existing bridge, will be approximately 10 feet higher at its peak, have three lanes of traffic in each direction and a pedestrian walkway on the northbound side of the bridge. As crews work to complete the main lanes of the CTP and begin demolishing the existing bridge, traffic will continue to be reduced to one lane in each direction.

Upcoming closures and activity

Lane reduction on eastbound I-30 exit ramp to Summit Road Work Ahead Sign

Crews closed one lane of the eastbound I-30 exit to Summit Avenue on July 28. This closure is expected to last through mid-2013.

Lane reduction on Hulen Street between Ranch View Road and Overton Terrace Court scheduled this week

The right lane of northbound Hulen Street between Ranch View Road and Overton Terrace will be closed daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 31 and Aug. 1.

Work along Rutledge Road expected to begin on Aug. 6

On Aug. 6, crews will begin work along Rutledge Road. A cul-de-sac will be constructed just west of the future Montgomery Street extension, making Rutledge Road a "dead-end" street. Construction will restrict traffic along Rutledge Road to local businesses and deliveries only; through traffic will be detoured to Vickery Boulevard.

For more information about upcoming lane closures and traffic-related news along NTTA roadways, go to the "Scheduled Lane Closures" listing at www.ntta.org or call (817) 207-0184.

Top Toll Violators list available online

 Top Violators

The NTTA's Top Toll Violator webpage, featuring a list of individuals who owe 100 or more outstanding tolls, is up and running. The list provides the public with a way to easily determine if they owe a significant debt to the NTTA and puts them on notice that they may be subject to collections lawsuits and other enforcement action by the NTTA.

The effort is working. The NTTA has been contacted by many individuals on the list as well as other customers who want to resolve payment on their overdue tolls and fines.

Learn more at Customer Information> Billing & Payment> Top Toll Violators. In addition to a top 100 list, the page includes downloadable, searchable PDFs of the complete list with the 25,000-plus names sorted alphabetically and by amount owed. Frequently asked questions and other customer service information also are available.
