The President George Bush Turnpike Western Extension, also known as State Highway 161, will provide a new, approximately 11.5-mile link in the growing loop around Dallas. The corridor consists of the tolled PGBT WE main lanes and the SH 161 frontage roads. Phase 1, which includes the frontage roads from Carrier Parkway to Interstate 20, is complete and open to traffic. Phases 2 and 3 consist of the tolled main lanes between SH 183 and I-30 and are also open to traffic. The final phase of the project, Phase 4, extends from I-30 to I-20 and is expected to open to traffic in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Ongoing Construction

On the north end of the project, several nightly closures along I-30 and SH 161 continue as crews complete steel girder installation. In addition, bridge drill shaft and bridge column installation are underway at January Lane.

On the south end of the project, the eastbound exit ramp from I-20 to SH 161 was closed to begin bridge column and cap work. This closure is scheduled to be in place until mid-January. Crews also continue bridge deck preparation work for the direct connectors at I-20 and concrete paving work south of Dickey Lane.

Upcoming Closures

Along I-20 and SH 161:

The following closures will be in place nightly from now through Sunday, Jan. 15, for crews to hang and place concrete beams at I-20 and SH 161 for the President George Bush Turnpike Western Extension project:

Now through Sunday, Jan. 15: Nightly from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

* Closure: Westbound I-20 exit ramp to SH 161 will be closed.

* Detour: Motorists wanting to exit will be detoured west to the Great Southwest Parkway exit ramp, then north to Mayfield Road, then back east to SH 161.

* Closure: Westbound I-20 frontage road from Robinson Road to SH 161 will be closed.

* Detour: Motorists will be detoured north to Mayfield Road, then west to Great Southwest Parkway and back to I-20.

* Closure: All southbound lanes of SH 161 from Mayfield Road to I-20 will be closed.

* Detour: Motorists will be detoured west to Great Southwest Parkway then back south to I-20.

Along I-30 and SH 161:

The following closures will be in place from Wednesday, Jan. 11, through Saturday, Jan. 14, for construction work along Interstate 30 and State Highway 161 for the President George Bush Turnpike Western Extension project:

Wednesday, Jan. 11, through Thursday, Jan. 12: Nightly from 7-8 p.m.

* Closure: One left, westbound main lane of I-30 from Belt Line Road to SH 161 will be closed.

Wednesday, Jan. 11, through Friday, Jan. 13: Nightly from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

SH 161 frontage road closures:

* Northbound SH 161: The northbound SH 161 frontage road from east- to westbound I-30 will be closed.

Northbound Detour: All northbound motorists will be detoured east onto the I-30 main lanes to the Belt Line Road U-Turn, then back to the westbound I-30 exit.

* Southbound SH 161: The southbound SH 161 frontage road from Egyptian Way to I-30 will be closed.

Southbound Detours: Eastbound Egyptian Way motorists attempting to head south on the SH 161 frontage road will be directed to continue east on Egyptian Way to Carrier Boulevard, then south to Tarrant Road, then back west to southbound SH 161. Westbound Egyptian Way traffic will be directed to continue west on Egyptian Way to Duncan Perry, then south to Tarrant Road, then back to southbound SH 161.

Wednesday, Jan. 11, through Friday, Jan. 13: Nightly from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

PGBT Western Extension closures:

* Closure: All southbound main lanes of the PGBT Western Extension from Lower Tarrant Road to Egyptian Way will be closed.

* Detour: Motorists will be detoured to the Lower Tarrant Road exit.

Wednesday, Jan. 11, through Friday, Jan. 13: Nightly from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

* Closure: All westbound I-30 main lanes from Carrier Parkway to SH 161 will be closed.

* Detour: Traffic will be reduced to one lane and diverted off the main lanes to the SH 161 exit, continuing west to the I-30 entrance ramp west of SH 161.

Friday, Jan. 13, from 10-11 p.m.

* Closure: One left, westbound main lane of I-30 from Belt Line Road to SH 161 will be closed.

From 10 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, through 9 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 14

SH 161 frontage road closures:

* Northbound SH 161: The northbound SH 161 frontage road from eastbound I-30 to westbound I-30 will be closed.

Northbound Detour: All northbound motorists will be detoured east onto the I-30 main lanes to the Belt Line Road U-Turn, then back to the westbound I-30 exit.

* Southbound SH 161: The southbound SH 161 frontage road from Egyptian Way to I-30 will be closed.

From 10 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, through 9 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 14

PGBT Western Extension closures

* Closure: All southbound main lanes of the PGBT Western Extension from Lower Tarrant Road to Egyptian Way will be closed.

* Detour: Motorists will be detoured to the Lower Tarrant Road exit.

From 11 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, through 9 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 14

* Closure: All westbound I-30 main lanes from Carrier Parkway to SH 161 will be closed.

* Detour: Traffic will be reduced to one lane and diverted off the main lanes and take the SH 161 exit, continuing west to the I-30 entrance ramp west of SH 161.
