                                 Lollapalooza  2011   ::   Val's Take  ::  A Fabulous Fest

So that's me at Lolla.  The photo down here, not up there...  Yes, I'm sporting a Valslist tattoo, cowboy boots and hat.  Yes, I'm in heaven: 3 days, 130 bands, 8 stages, so much music to discover. It may not be your idea of fun;  90 and sweltering, big crowds, beating sun turning to deluge with lightning. I braved the elements - for YOU - and Valslist.com.  And I have some GREAT new music to introduce to you.

It's a rough job but hey, somebody's gotta do it.

My nickname should be Mamapalooza.  Or I could title this piece "The Mamas & The Papas Do Lolla"  (aka me, husband Mark and our radio friend John). We were the only boomers NOT in a VIP Lounge. By choice, we were back in coach with the kids, experiencing the fest like they do.

Here's what your kids saw at Lolla:

The Good

  • Record crowds behaving well
  • New bands showing you their best - wanting to make a great first impression
  • New music that sounds like our old stuff (samples below)
  • Lots of making out. What's with music and making out?
  • Hip shoes & boots. Lots of ankle stuff goin' on
  • Kids filling up their water bottles WITH WATER for free at The Oasis
  • The best Chicago food ever - healthy wraps, rice & beans, restaurant quality
  • Families - with younger kids - enjoying music together at the Kidzapalooza stage
  • Lucky first timers with a cool dad who took them to the fest
  • People in wheelchairs accessing the fest like the rest of us - a beautiful sight
  • Spray misters - huge industrial fans spraying mist water on hot people - instant cool
  • So many hats: rocker wannabe fedoras, hats with props to find friends in a crowd, bandannas tied like we used to, bunny ears, eiffel tower hat, hats with tall things, purple wigs...
  • A human chain of friends holding hands to get through the crowd together
  • Nice manners - I heard  "excuse me"   "I'm so sorry"  and   "thank you"  a LOT
  • Chicago's skyline - and lake breezes - and surrounding Millennium Park - location. location. location.
  • Phenominal laser show at Coldplay, fireworks, beach ball balloons (their float is calming), trippy light shows at Perry's dance stage.  These played to all your senses.  A treat.
  • Fans belting out song lyrics with the bands - the ultimate compliment a fan can give.
  • It poured on Sunday - a much welcome cool-off - soaking you to your underpants - and fans singing in the rain.
  • Really good dancing.
The Bad (or kinda bad)
  • The reddest sunburns ever
  • Girl Talk (the genius artist who creates mashup-style remixes combining vintage tracks/oldies with electronic dance beats) dissing Lolla bc they asked him to get the kids off his stage  (one of his trademarks - he brings the audience up)
  • People in torrential downpour with nothing to protect their phones - ouch.
  • Occasional lightning - so what made us think we were safe under all those trees and around all that metal??  Like when you get in a cab and don't wear a seatbelt and somehow feel safe anyway.
  • Shirtless men - who shouldn't have - you know what I mean
  • Perry's dance tent - holds thousands of hot sweaty dancing people - with light show and big bass just in case you weren't feeling it enough.  Kids loved it.  I watched from afar -
  • A group of guys wearing 400% polyester costumes covering entire body and head - did they know it was 95 degrees in the shade, sitting still made you sweat?
  • Really bad dancing.
The Ugly
  • My friend's daughter got her iPhone ripped right out of her hand and away it went
  • One of my new fave bands, Portugal. The Man, got their van and trailer with 96 pieces of equipment stolen.  Van found. Equipment (everything they own) gone.
  • Teen girl bawling her eyes out while friends tried to console her. The Mamapalooza in me really came out - I wanted to hug her and make it better. I think it was a boyfriend thing.
  • Cee Lo Green in what looked to be a Roman Empire Ruler cape of some sort.  Really?  It was 95 degrees out.  He also blew a speaker so sound was not good.
  • The token kids on ecstasy - dancing in their own world and never stopping.  Really ugly.
  • ZERO CELL PHONE COVERAGE.  The biggest bummer frustration of the fest.  Kids couldn't find their friends, people couldn't connect with their rides end of day...   The anger level was high on this one - the one place you NEED a cell phone is in a massive crowd.
  • Rows of ambulances lined up and ready to rescue smart kids who made bad choices.  A sad necessity.
  • Soooo. Many. Tattoos.

Tips For Next Year:
  • GET YOUR TICKETS EARLY:  The fest sold out this year and the late-sters were frantic to find a ticket.  I got a zillion calls...  Also, the price goes up a few time along the way. You're better off buying your tix early even if you're not positive you can go - you can always sell them to a late-ster and be their hero.
  • PREPARE FOR RAIN:  Weather is one thing, but rain is the evil enemy. Plastic bags and a poncho are so easy to throw in your pack - use them to sit on, put wet stuff in, keep wet stuff out, and save you money if they protect your phone and camera. In the downpour on Sunday I had a plastic trash bag and kids were begging me for a corner of it, one offered to pay me $20 for it...  people were in a panic to keep their phones dry.
  • HAVE A PLAN B:  Since cell phone coverage is spotty and completely undependable, so make a plan to meet up with friends AT THE FOUNTAIN AT A CERTAIN TIME - it's the most open area at the fest and exact locations are easy to nail (east side, west side, etc.)  I talked to so many kids who got separated from their friends and were on their own the entire day because they didn't have a Plan B.
  • DO YOUR HOMEWORK:  Check out the Lolla bands on iTunes before you go!  Don't just wander from stage to stage, or stay at Perry's dance tent all day...  Make a list of new bands that interest you and go hear them. This is probably the biggest gig they've played - be a good fan - give them your ear.
  • THE POINT OF A MUSIC FEST:  It's a big line up of bands to sample over a short period of time. If you're a music lover this is your chance to get caught up fast. The fest planners choose the best of the new - so go get your money's worth!
