CD Review: The Teaser - Little G. Weevil
by: Garth Stiebel

The Teaser - Little G Weevil
Timing is everything, never more true than in the Blues, where rhythm and expertly-placed licks make or break a song.

Little G Weevil is a student of the Blues and he
is well on his way to becoming a master. A journey that he began in his first CD, Southern Experience, exploring Memphis and Mississippi Delta Blues, with a dash of Chicago electric for flavour. But it doesn't stop there.

In The Teaser the influence of John Lee Hooker is evident in Highway 78, that of R.L. Burnside, shouting out in Back Porch and Muddy Waters, complaining of lost love in She Used to Call me Sugar.

Fact is, you can find most of the major themes of the Blues embedded in the grooves of this well-crafted recording; from betraying women, to male braggadocio, poverty and bad times and just plain fed-up and I ain't gonna do this no more music (this one played in a hard-driving, soaring solo on 8.47).

And let's not forget who's backing up the man - Bill Burke on bass, Bob Page on piano and organ and special nods to Maurice Nazzaro's wailing harp and John V. McKnight's quintessential blues drumming.

Little G plays a range of guitars, from his custom Fibenare to a 1940 Kay Archtop and a Bacon Fat cigar box guitar, all with flair and soul. This is a very personal album says G, all the songs coming from his own experiences, no covers here. Just as it should be.

The Orangeville Blues and Jazz Festival will be headlining Little G Weevil at the 10th annual event this spring; bringing back a fan favourite and a true exponent of authentic Southern Blues.

Timing is indeed everything and, if you'd like a preview of what he'll be presenting to us on the first weekend in June, order this CD directly from www.littlegweevil.net. You won't find it in stores and you definitely won't regret it.

What's Your Blues Name?

This is a fun little exercise...

A great stage name is a must for every Blues artist. However, this begs the question: "How do you come up with a proper Blues name?"

We invite you to try the following exercise to develop your own "Blues Name".

See below to view the names that correspond with your first, middle and last initials.

Put them together and suddenly you have a Blues Master's moniker.
